Orchid Technologies Engineering & Consulting Case Study: Elevator Controller | 2008-07-18 | Orchid Technologies Engineering & Consulting |
| The design of Elevator Control Systems presents a unique mix of sophisticated computer control needs blended with industrial strength power switching requirements. Orchid's primary challenge was to maintain a quiet operating environment for the control microprocessors while holding overall product cost to a minimum. Drawing on Technology from AMD and Microchip Technology, Orchid fashioned an AMD AM80188ER primary control board, and a Microchip PIC16C923 based slave processor. This master-slave combination permits the unlimited, cost effective expansion of control circuits in support of Elevator Control Systems of all sizes. Add to this a display and keypad for maintenance applications.

This Might Be the Last Place You'd Expect to Find an Intel Processor | 2008-01-01 | Intel |
| Finding a processing platform that runs so efficiently has been challenging for developers like GD Canada. Proprietary technology can offer the performance and power efficiency needed, but such solutions are often vendor-specific, take a very long time to develop and deploy, and can be quite costly to maintain, let alone upgrade. Intel really attacked the thermal output and power consumption problem when they came out with the Intel Pentium M processor and associated chipsets. Shortly after Intel launched the Intel Pentium M processor, the U.S. Army announced the Future Combat System (FCS) program, a move to standardize the Army's entire vehicle computing infrastructure on a common product.

The AMD Opteron Processor Helps a Busy Midwestern U.S. Law Firm Stay Connected and Prepare for the Future | 2007-06-25 | Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) |
| For Metcalf, Kaspari, Howard, Engdahl & Lazarus, P.A., a seven-employee law firm in Minneapolis, Minn., technology was the last thing in which the company wanted to invest. It suffered that PC-based document storage and peer-to-peer networking, suffered from limited access and frequent lost connections. Also, the existing system cost the firm thousands of dollars in maintenance and service calls every year. It implemented an AMD Opteron processor-based, 1P, pedestal server and installed and supported by Apex Computer of Minnesota.

Refining the Weather Report With Itanium 2-Based Servers | 0000-00-00 | Intel |
| The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) is relied on to provide accurate forecasts for national news channels and industry groups including civic authorities and agricultural bodies. To develop truly accurate predictions, the FMI has always relied on High Performance Computing (HPC) but traditionally shared the only platform in Finland, located at the Central Scientific Computing Centre, with other academic groups. To further its research, the FMI recognized the need to purchase a scalable and reliable HPC solution that would offer any-time access to key data and analysis tools. After a two-month benchmark process in early 2005, the FMI chose to install two Intel Itanium 2 processor-based SGI Altix 3700 BX2 machines running Unix, which proved their value in meeting the Institute's price performance criteria.
