RISC Processor Based Speech Codec Implementation for Emerging Mobile Multimedia Messaging Solutions | 2008-01-01 | Aricent |
| Mobile Multimedia Messaging (MMS) promises to provide a richer and versatile experience to the user along with new revenue streams for mobile service operators. MMS allows a full content range including images, audio, video and text in any combination. It delivers a location independent, total communication experience to the mobile customer. As proved by the success of Short Message Service (SMS) in generating revenue MMS applications would be the essential drivers of continuous growth in new services beyond voice. This paper describes the challenges and techniques of implementing speech codecs on RISC processors. The specific speech codec implemented was GSM-AMR and the processor used was ARM9TDMI.

A Super Scalar Sort Algorithm for RISC Processors | 2007-11-07 | IBM |
| The compare and branch sequences required in a traditional sort algorithm can not efficiently exploit multiple execution units present in currently available high performance RISC processors. This is because of the long latency of the compare instructions and the sequential algorithm used in sorting. With the increased level of integration on a chip, this trend is expected to continue. The paper has developed new sort algorithms which eliminate almost all the compares, provide functional parallelism which can be exploited by multiple execution units, significantly reduce the number of passes through keys, and improve data locality. These new algorithms outperform traditional sort algorithms by a large factor.

Stable, Highly Available Infrastructure Supports Transaction-Intensive Oracle Database | 0000-00-00 | Unisys |
| Named the "World's best-performing stock exchange" in 2002, the Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE) manages trading in 685 listed companies with a capitalization of more than $25 billion. The Karachi Stock Exchange's main business objective was to synchronize its database with its newly developed trading application, which can match more than 400 trades per second. Having already deployed an ES7000 server-based solution-the first step in moving from a UNIX/RISC platform to an open architecture based on a Microsoft Windows and Intel platform-the company sought to achieve even greater performance for its increasing number of concurrent users. The Karachi Stock Exchange is using Unisys ES7000 64-bit technology to run its database application based on Oracle in a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 operating environment.

Migrating From RISC/UNIX: It's Time to Choose Linux | 2007-05-01 | Novell |
| For the past decade and more, RISC/UNIX has established a history of solid reliability in the data center. It typically runs mission-critical applications, including back-end databases, and has a reputation for good performance, high reliability, proven scalability and trustworthy security. But these benefits come at a high Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). UNIX generally requires expensive proprietary software and hardware as well as budget-draining annual maintenance costs. These expenses are a key factor in recent, widespread migrations to other platforms, specifically Linux.

A SystemC Transaction Level Model for the MIPS R3000 Processor | 2007-03-29 | Concordia University |
| Processor cores in embedded applications build today the cornerstone of System-on-Chip designs. Among the most successful RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) cores are the MIPS processors used in applications such as DVD, automotive, broadband access, networking, etc. This paper designs and verifies a Transaction Level Modeling (TLM) architecture of the MIPS R3000 in SystemC. The TLM in SystemC is adopted so that abstract data types can be used for higher level modeling and faster simulation. The processor is implemented such that the instruction and data caches contain all the necessary instructions and data to eliminate complex memory access management, respectively.

Lockheed Martin Unit Moves SAP From UNIX to Windows, Cuts Technology Cost 41 Percent | 0000-00-00 | Microsoft |
| SAP software is mission critical to the Missiles and Fire Control unit of global aerospace manufacturer Lockheed Martin, which wanted to significantly reduce the costs of its deployment while improving its performance. Its solution: migrate the SAP infrastructure from Reduced Instruction Set Computing (RISC) platforms running UNIX to the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 operating system and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 on Intel technologies. The company expects to save up to 41 percent of SAP hardware (server and storage), software, and maintenance costs over the next five years - while exceeding the performance it saw on the RISC-based UNIX solution. That in turn contributes to the company's business agility and competitiveness, helping it to continue to lead in its highly competitive market.
