A Study of Software Methodology Analysis: "Great Taste or Less Filling" | 2006-04-27 06:57:16
| Software project management methodologies that have developed in the past couple of decades have done so to address the endemic problem of software project failures caused, in a large part, by lack of planning and poor execution. Methodologies like Waterfall, Sashimi, Spiral and Agile have all become key tools in a project manager's tool box. With so many methodologies littering the software development domain, it begs the question as to which development methodology is the right one for a particular project. How does a project manager know which methodology available today is the right one to produce satisfactory results? This paper addresses these questions and also how to aid students in their understanding of these choices. | |||

Leading Recruitment Firm Enhances Project Management and Cuts IT Spending | 2005-10-01 | Microsoft |
| The French branch of the Vedior group, the world's third largest human resources and staffing corporation, depends on a complex IT infrastructure to support its operations. The company historically managed IT projects using largely manual processes. To increase efficiency, reduce costs, and standardise operational processes, Vedior France deployed the Microsoft Office Enterprise Project Management Solution with the help of technology partner M7. The new system offers automated tools to allocate personnel and resources. It also helps managers track the progress of projects, sending alerts where work falls behind schedule. Increased visibility of projects and spending greatly increases the accountability of the IT department. Automation of project management processes promises to deliver a 20 per cent reduction in IT spending overall. | |||

Council Improves Project Planning With New Technology | 2005-10-01 | Microsoft |
| Birmingham City Council is responsible for delivering a large and complex range of services ranging from Housing, Social Care, and the highway infrastructure through to dealing with abandoned vehicles, to the city's 1 million customers. While project management is important to the council, Microsoft Project was used by Project Managers, other than by Programme Management, mainly in isolation. BCC sought to consolidate this into an enterprise-wide view of project activity. This included expanding the technology to a minimum of 100 project managers and more than 200 team members. BCC sought to build on its existing knowledge base and started discussions with Microsoft Enterprise Project Management (EPM) solution partner, Corporate Project Solutions (CPS) to deploy a Microsoft Office Enterprise Project Management (EPM) Solution. | |||

Critical 'Human' Success Factors for Purchasing Commercial Off the Shelf Software (COTS) | 2006-04-25 03:35:20
| One of the biggest challenges presented by a continually changing business environment is the need to update Information Systems (IS) to meet the changing needs of an organization. Information systems are key to an organization's success, and effectively managing the replacement process is vital to meeting business requirements. Typically, a business replaces its information systems in one of two ways: custom development or Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) system selection. This paper identifies ten critical human factor issues associated with a COTS software package selection process. The paper discusses how these factors affect the success of the selection process, thereby impacting the long-term business and strategic objectives of an organization. | |||

IBM PLM FBC ROI: The Financial Business Case for Product Lifecycle Management Information Technology Decision Making | 2006-04-04 03:03:08
| Increasingly, PLM investment decision makers are reverting to standard Financial Business Case (FBC) criteria, such as Return On Investment (ROI), net present value, and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), as part of the solution selection evaluation process to help them do this. When company representatives ask solution providers financial questions, or when a project leader has to make a business case for a PLM proposal in their own organization, a methodology is required to effectively prepare a response. To address this need, IBM has developed an FBC justification methodology to assist its clients in evaluating the value offered by the IBM/Dassault Systemes PLM product suite. | |||

The paper will concentrate on concepts and general functionality. ANSI criteria will be addressed and processes will be discussed to establish best practices and demonstrate how the web can be utilized for effective EVM implementation.

Knowledge, Action, and Reflection in Management Education - The Case of Project Management | 2005-09-13 | University of the West of England |
| This paper takes as its point of departure a theme frequently addressed in the recent debate around educational management, and reflected in a well attended stream at the 20th EGOS conference, titled 'Drawing on Organization Studies to Design, Manage and Organize Education'. An important first step in joining this debate is, in the authors' view, to reflect on the premise that 'management of student learning can be organized on the basis of the received wisdom of theories and concepts in organization studies rather than educational research'.
