Virtual Desktop Infrastructure and Server Based Computing: Comparative Highlights | 2006-09-01 | Ericom Software |
| VMware's Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) is a relatively new method of implementing centralized computing. This paper presents a brief overview of VDI and compares it to Server Based Computing (SBC), the current widely recognized method for implementing centralized computing. The paper highlights several advantages that VDI has over SBC, which may eventually establish it as the preferred method. However to achieve this, several VDI limitations and shortcomings must be addressed. This paper explains these limitations and discusses how they may be addressed utilizing solutions and technologies that are currently available for SBC. | |||

WLMTK Overview: Using HP-UX Workload Manager Effectively With Your Most Critical Applications | 2007-01-03 02:05:11 | Hewlett-Packard |
| HP-UX WorkLoad Manager (WLM) is a virtualization solution that helps to achieve a true Adaptive Enterprise. As a goal-based policy engine in the HP Virtual Server Environment (VSE), WLM integrates virtualization techniques - including partitioning, resource management, utility pricing, and clustering - and links them to the Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and business priorities. Using WLM in combination with HP-UX WorkLoad Manager Toolkits (WLMTK), a person can quickly and effectively deploy WLM for use with his or her key applications. This paper discusses the toolkits available with WLMTK A.01.10, which runs on PA-RISC servers (HP 9000) running HP-UX 11i v1 or later or on PA-RISC or Intel Itanium-based servers running HP-UX 11i v2 (B.11.23) or later. | |||

Intel Virtualization Technology | 2006-09-01 01:00:13 | Intel |
| Intel is taking server and workstation virtualization to a new level with Intel Virtualization Technology - a complementary hardware-assisted technology available on new Intel platforms that makes virtualization solutions even better. Intel Virtualization Technology provides greater support for increasing server utilization in the data center by consolidating more applications, at the same time improving data center reliability and reducing the complexity of software-only virtualized environments. It also sets the stage for future virtualization usages such as instantaneous failover environments and dynamically adjusting workload datacenters. | |||

IDC Technical Brief: Enabling Technologies for Power and Cooling | 2006-11-01 06:07:19 | Hewlett-Packard |
| In June 2006, Hewlett-Packard (HP) announced its next-generation blade portfolio, the BladeSystem c-Class, which addresses some of the total cost of ownership (TCO) issues that typify high-density computing environments. Among the concerns addressed by HP's newest line of blade servers is the need to manage power and cooling at the rack level. This IDC Technical Brief discusses this issue at length and explains how HP Thermal Logic technologies, introduced with the BladeSystem c-Class portfolio, can help manage and optimize power and cooling resources in high-density data centers.

Multi-Port Network Adapters for Server Consolidation and Virtualization | 2006-10-06 01:00:14 | Hewlett-Packard |
| This white paper discusses the IT benefits that enterprises can gain from VMware Infrastructure 3 virtualization software when using HP ProLiant multi-port network adapters with Intel technology. High-speed Gigabit Ethernet network adapters (NICs) play an essential role in the VMware Infrastructure model - server networking functionality is important for secure management of VMware ESX Server 3, for enabling VMotion technology and for meeting the network throughput requirements of multiple virtual machines. In particular, best practices for VMware ESX Server 3 call for at least three dedicated network connections. HP ProLiant multi-port adapters are the optimum solution, providing extra ports to support the VMware Infrastructure in one Input/Output (I/O) server slot and freeing I/O slots in the server for other purposes. | |||

Credit Suisse Group Optimizes Resources With an Automated Server Provisioning Solution From Symantec | 2006-08-29 01:00:13 | Symantec |
| Credit Suisse Group is a leading global financial services company headquartered in Zurich. With business-critical applications residing on more than 1,000 Sun UNIX-based servers, server provisioning was a time-consuming endeavor for Credit Suisse Group. The problem was particularly acute for the development and engineering environment, with provisioning taking as long as a couple hours. Leveraging VERITAS OpForce software from Symantec, the global financial services leader reduced server provisioning to 30 minutes, thereby enabling faster roll out of new software releases and time to market for new application services. | |||
