Project Management Approach to Server Consolidation/Virtualization | 2007-11-01 | Project Management Institute |
| A lot is been written about virtualization and server consolidation theses days. In order to have a successful virtualization, it is important that one has a clear plan of what he or she is trying to achieve. This is definitely one of those projects where one learns as they go. Especially, when external customers are involved, where downtime is to be minimized, one need to know exactly when to schedule it. Project management can be very helpful in planning a project like this. When one jot down the original project ideas, it helps to see all important steps on paper, or better, in a project management software.

HypoVereinsbank Opts for Virtualization | 2007-11-01 | Fujitsu |
| The HypoVereinsbank wanted to reduce complexity and improve economy. The challenge was to increase flexibility. HypoVereinsbank Information Services GmbH (HVB IS) reorganized a major part of its data center operations with the help of Fujitsu Siemens Computers. The project involved consolidation of some 650 physical servers with PRIMERGY Blade servers and VMware. HVB IS migrated groups of 15 to 30 old servers to the new system with impressive results.

HP PolyServe Software for Microsoft SQL Server Best Practices for Sizing White Paper | 2007-11-01 | Hewlett-Packard (HP) |
| This paper provides best practices related to implementing HP PolyServe Software for Microsoft SQL Server, version 3.6. With HP PolyServe Software, one does not need to know the exact number of instances to determine the consolidation ratio. Instance mobility and the ability to react to change eliminate the need for months of analysis, making the basis of the consolidation ratio budgetary more than technical. Besides instance mobility, one can add or remove servers dynamically and with minimal impact, diminishing the need for 100% technical accuracy.

Advanced Availability for VMware Infrastructure 3 - Veritas Cluster Server for HA, DR and More... | 2007-11-01 | Symantec |
| Where a hardware failure may have previously impacted a single application, with virtualization multiple applications would now be affected. It's like having too many eggs in one basket. There is a greater need for a single HA/DR solution that is application aware and provides -to-end capabilities for true high availability. The attendee of this webcast will learn how with Veritas Cluster Server one can achieve a comprehensive HA/DR that extends beyond VMware's basic HA capabilities; utilize a single architecture for both local and global failover; use VCS as a single point-of-control for all HA specific VMware tasks; gain continuous improvements in availability through fault analysis and downtime reporting; and test HA/DR effectiveness without affecting primary environment.

Virtualizing Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 With VMware ESX Server 3 | 2007-11-01 | Dell |
| Initial enterprise virtualization deployments often focus on test and development and server consolidation. Once these initial deployments are successful, the next step is to identify additional applications that can be virtualized, often beginning with basic, noncritical applications. Finally, enterprises might consider virtualizing their most critical, performance-intensive applications - including Microsoft Exchange, a common application that can be critical to enterprise operations and requires high performance. Evaluating Exchange in virtualized environments can help determine whether other performance-intensive applications are suitable candidates for virtualization.

Whitnall School District Goes Virtual With StoreVault to Deal With High Investment in Infrastructure | 2007-11-01 | NetApp |
| The Whitnall School District (WSD) is a consortium of educational institutions, based in Village of Hales Corners that is partly in Franklin city and partly in Greenfield. Storage needs kept expanding as backup data had to be retained for 7 years, instead of the previous 4 year time period. Virtual environments for server infrastructure became the new option because investing in new physical servers seemed expensive and time consuming. The virtual environment using VMWare ESX infrastructure was growing rapidly. However, the available disk space was limited, as it was based on the number of physical drives on the ESX server hardware. As ESX server capacity had already reached its limit, a SAN could help in expanding available storage space to store the virtual machines.

Case Study: Server Virtualization Solution Using VMware | 2007-10-26 | Berbee Information Networks |
| Lakeview Medical Center was faced with the challenge of managing a rapidly growing organization with a data center that was originally designed to handle a fraction of the actual workload. Lakeview Medical Center used VMware to consolidate servers and provide a more efficient environment. This reduced backup times, improved application response time and reduced cost of ownership.

Danish Online Services Provider Simplifies IT Management and Consolidates 50 Servers Onto 4 Machines With Virtualization | 2007-10-26 | Dell |
| Zitcom is an online services provider based in Denmark. Zitcom was burdened by an unplanned proliferation of 50 physical servers in its datacenter. The servers were not being used effectively and were consuming high quantities of electricity. Zitcom wanted to introduce a more reliable and energy-efficient solution that was easier to maintain. Zitcom worked with Dell to design a solution that consolidated the server and storage environment. This solution consists of VMware Infrastructure 3 Datacenter management and optimisation software, four Dell PowerEdge blade servers and a Dell | EMC Storage Area Network (SAN). Dell, EMC and VMware collaborate closely to ensure that these virtual infrastructure solutions are production-ready.

TechNet Webcast: Virtualization of Test and Development Environments, and Their Impact on Existing Applications (Level 200) | 2007-10-22 | Microsoft |
| This webcast looks at virtualization solutions starting with moving existing applications and infrastructure servers into a virtualized environment. It follows two fictitious companies, Contoso and Fabrikam, through their virtualization path. Contoso has a number of application servers that they wish to consolidate, while also providing new services to clients without having to grow their data center. Some of these servers run previous applications that Fabrikam operates in a distributed world, with a number of infrastructure workloads at different offices that they wish to consolidate.
