Introduction to Virtualization Technology | 2007-11-02 | CRU Solutions |
| Virtualization is a technique for organizations with at least three servers to consolidate and get better use out of server resources. In simple terms, a well-designed virtualization solution combines the right servers (often blade servers), storage devices, and virtualization software to reduce the number of server boxes, mitigate possible hardware failures and significantly reduce the risk of downtime. A well-designed virtualization solution can save organizations thousands of dollars every year in operational costs.

Project Management Approach to Server Consolidation/Virtualization | 2007-11-01 | Project Management Institute |
| A lot is been written about virtualization and server consolidation theses days. In order to have a successful virtualization, it is important that one has a clear plan of what he or she is trying to achieve. This is definitely one of those projects where one learns as they go. Especially, when external customers are involved, where downtime is to be minimized, one need to know exactly when to schedule it. Project management can be very helpful in planning a project like this. When one jot down the original project ideas, it helps to see all important steps on paper, or better, in a project management software.

HypoVereinsbank Opts for Virtualization | 2007-11-01 | Fujitsu |
| The HypoVereinsbank wanted to reduce complexity and improve economy. The challenge was to increase flexibility. HypoVereinsbank Information Services GmbH (HVB IS) reorganized a major part of its data center operations with the help of Fujitsu Siemens Computers. The project involved consolidation of some 650 physical servers with PRIMERGY Blade servers and VMware. HVB IS migrated groups of 15 to 30 old servers to the new system with impressive results.

Whitnall School District Goes Virtual With StoreVault to Deal With High Investment in Infrastructure | 2007-11-01 | Network Appliance (NetApp) |
| The Whitnall School District (WSD) is a consortium of educational institutions, based in Village of Hales Corners that is partly in Franklin city and partly in Greenfield. Storage needs kept expanding as backup data had to be retained for 7 years, instead of the previous 4 year time period. Virtual environments for server infrastructure became the new option because investing in new physical servers seemed expensive and time consuming. The virtual environment using VMWare ESX infrastructure was growing rapidly. However, the available disk space was limited, as it was based on the number of physical drives on the ESX server hardware. As ESX server capacity had already reached its limit, a SAN could help in expanding available storage space to store the virtual machines.

Case Study: Server Virtualization Solution Using VMware | 2007-10-26 | Berbee Information Networks |
| Lakeview Medical Center was faced with the challenge of managing a rapidly growing organization with a data center that was originally designed to handle a fraction of the actual workload. Lakeview Medical Center used VMware to consolidate servers and provide a more efficient environment. This reduced backup times, improved application response time and reduced cost of ownership.

TechNet Webcast: Virtualization of Test and Development Environments, and Their Impact on Existing Applications (Level 200) | 2007-10-22 | Microsoft |
| This webcast looks at virtualization solutions starting with moving existing applications and infrastructure servers into a virtualized environment. It follows two fictitious companies, Contoso and Fabrikam, through their virtualization path. Contoso has a number of application servers that they wish to consolidate, while also providing new services to clients without having to grow their data center. Some of these servers run previous applications that Fabrikam operates in a distributed world, with a number of infrastructure workloads at different offices that they wish to consolidate.

Hosting Provider Saves Up to 85% of Power Consumption and Improves Server Management by Using Virtuozzo | 2007-10-16 | Parallels |
| ServInt specializes in full-service, high-bandwidth web hosting for business customers. ServInt also provides clients with high-speed Internet access through its Access Services group. ServInt built a successful dedicated hosting business, but wanted to reduce power consumption and better manage their servers. Virtuozzo provided a highly efficient solution for reducing power output through the consolidation of poorly utilized servers. The OS virtualization technology in Virtuozzo provides the lowest possible overhead and lowest possible power consumption of virtualization solutions in the market today. In addition, the management tools that accompany Virtuozzo reduce waste associated with management tasks such as server migration and backup.

Momentum Webcast: Introduction to Microsoft Core Infrastructure Optimization Model and Virtualization (Level 100) | 2007-10-15 | Microsoft |
| Infrastructure Optimization (IO) is the systematic process of reducing the complexity and costs associated with managing an IT infrastructure and improving its security and stability, with the goal of enhanced productivity for an organization and its people. The Microsoft Infrastructure Optimization Model (IOM) provides a framework for identifying the people, processes, and technology of an IT infrastructure and describes four levels of maturity through which those IT capabilities can evolve for ever greater strategic value to the organization. A major component of IO is virtualization. The attendee of this webcast will learn how virtualization can help to consolidate servers, maximize uptime, recover from disruptive events, and reduce the application-to-application conflicts that can cause compatibility problems in IT environment.

Virtual Lab Automation: A Quantum Leap in IT Cost Reduction and Application Development Process Improvement | 2007-10-11 | EMC |
| Responding to an explosion in the number of underutilized servers that have accumulated across software development teams and to the unsustainably increasing percentage of time spent on repetitive system setup and configuration tasks in support of AD activities, enterprise application development teams, and the software development teams in leading software companies and system manufacturers, have turned to Virtual Lab Automation for relief. By slashing equipment-related capital and operating costs, dramatically reducing the time wasted repetitively provisioning systems, and by providing for cost-effective quality assurance even when teams are distributed around the globe, the Virtual Lab Automation system represents a new and critical "Best practice" component in any software development and test environment.

Fast-Growing Hosting Service Provider Centralizes and Simplifies Server Management | 2007-10-01 | Microsoft |
| RackForce was the first hosting service provider to bring Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 technology to market. However, with hundreds of customers and an array of server nodes, managing the company's growing virtual environment was a challenge. Enterprise-ready and easy to administer, Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager lets RackForce centralize and vastly improve virtual machine management. The company can streamline server management and maintain an average of four customers to each physical server, rather than the one-to-one ratio previously supported. System Center Virtual Machine Manager enables RackForce to easily identify which servers have capacity for additional workload, and it significantly simplifies physical to virtual machine migrations. RackForce expects to be able to cut maintenance and provisioning time in half with System Center Virtual Machine Manager.
