whitepaper SENAC Lowers TCO Through Messaging Server Consolidation2007-01-05 01:00:23 Microsoft
The National Commercial Education Service (SENAC) promotes professional education in Brazil. Based in Sao Paulo, SENAC has long been at the forefront of technological innovation in the educational field. Lately, SENAC focused on upgrading its messaging and collaboration systems in order to take advantage of new messaging features and reduce the number of server computers that it manages. SENAC migrated 100 users to Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, giving them access to a highly integrated messaging system that supports mobile workers and reduces the institute's total cost of ownership of its messaging environment.
whitepaper Server Virtualization Solution Using VMware2007-01-02 Berbee Information Networks
Lakeview Medical Center is an independent, nonprofit, 75-bed community hospital that serves northwest Wisconsin. The organization boasts modern facilities with state-of-the-art technology and offers the area's largest number of full-time, resident doctors and specialists on its staff. Lakeview Medical Center was faced with the challenge of managing a rapidly growing organization with a data center that was originally designed to handle a fraction of the actual workload. This undue stress began to cause a number of day-today problems, the most critical of which was application availability. As a solution they used VMware to consolidate servers and provide a more efficient environment.

whitepaper European Financial Services Provider Migrates Database From Sybase to SQL Server 20002007-01-01 01:00:30 Microsoft
REAAL Verzekeringen, a part of SNS REAAL Group, was facing several issues with its heterogeneous IT infrastructure and applications. Maintaining multiple technology platforms meant a higher investment in IT skills. The unavailability of people with Sybase skills and the undependability of its aging solutions led the organization to conduct a pilot migration from Sybase to Microsoft SQL Server 2000, with the intent of standardizing on this platform. REAAL Verzekeringen engaged Tata Consultancy Services, a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner to help migrate the most complex and largest databases. The pilot has resulted in a clear understanding of the benefits, most notably, server consolidation and improved administration.
whitepaper Pittsford Central School District Learns About HP's Commitment to Educational Market2006-12-20 01:00:25 Hewlett-Packard
The Pittsford Central School District, a recipient of the prestigious New York State Governor's Excelsior Award for quality, is one of the top school districts in the United States. As Pittsford teachers and staff increasingly adopt new technologies, the district's total data storage is growing by more than 100 percent per year, and the need for improved storage management along with it. To gain greater control over storage assets, improve performance, and increase security, the Pittsford Central School District's Technology Department is consolidating storage islands on a Storage Area Network (SAN) based on the HP StorageWorks 4000 Enterprise Virtual Array. The district is automating and strengthening backups with HP OpenView Storage Data Protector and consolidating file-server management using the HP BladeSystem.
whitepaper Seamless Physical and Virtual Server Management: An Integrated Management Approach2006-11-16 Opsware
Virtualization is delivering significant benefits to IT organizations that employ virtualized server, storage, and file system solutions. As enterprise demand for new applications and capabilities shows no sign of slowing, neither do most IT budgets show any sign of expanding to match the need. Enterprises are turning to virtualization to maximize platform resources, and the approach is spreading beyond application development and testing labs to production systems--including application and Web server infrastructures. Yet, while virtualized resources help enterprises meet their growing capacity needs, they also pose serious new management challenges. The long-term success of virtualization strategies will depend on how well virtualized systems can be managed.

In addition, vendors are stepping up to support customers' virtualization needs with a broader range of solutions, making it easier to virtualize operations. The original virtualization solution provider, VMware, is now joined by Sun Solaris 10, Microsoft Virtual Server, IBM LPAR, and XenSource. Not only can server resources be virtualized, now they can be virtualized on a wide range of platforms, which leads directly to virtualization's most significant challenge--management.

This whitepaper explains how Opsware can help to manage traditional server environments with the integrated capabilities required to successfully manage virtual server environments as well.

whitepaper Server Security, Patching and Virtualization2006-12-23 01:00:24 Blue Lane Technologies
The benefits of virtualization far outweigh the challenges, and the rapid rate of adoption of platforms like VMware proves this to be true. Still, challenges remain. Security patching of servers currently plagues the virtual world much as it does the physical, but presents a slightly unique set of problems. The solution to maintaining these virtual environments is to apply the same concept of virtualization to the security patch. PatchPoint is the world's first inline patch proxy capable of replicating the function of the software security patch on the network wire, not on the server. As such, PatchPoint is capable of creating a completely trusted domain in which virtual machines can be protected regardless of their state.

whitepaper HP Integrity Servers Help Keep Planes and Passengers in the Air2006-12-13 01:00:24 Hewlett-Packard
Lufthansa Technik Logistik GmbH (LTL) supplies Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) services to 450 airlines worldwide. Its heterogeneous server environment delivered low performance and high maintenance costs and also had availability and scalability issues. Working together with HP, Lufthansa Systems consolidated the 18 old PA-RISC machines down to two HP Integrity Business Critical Servers (BCS). It transitioned LTL from PA-RISC to Itanium. HP MSL tape libraries and EVA storage arrays were provided for backup and storage. They were formed into two identical server and storage systems, connected by SAN switches to create a high availability mirrored environment.
