whitepaper HP Integrity Servers Help Keep Planes and Passengers in the Air2006-12-13 01:00:24 Hewlett-Packard
Lufthansa Technik Logistik GmbH (LTL) supplies Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) services to 450 airlines worldwide. Its heterogeneous server environment delivered low performance and high maintenance costs and also had availability and scalability issues. Working together with HP, Lufthansa Systems consolidated the 18 old PA-RISC machines down to two HP Integrity Business Critical Servers (BCS). It transitioned LTL from PA-RISC to Itanium. HP MSL tape libraries and EVA storage arrays were provided for backup and storage. They were formed into two identical server and storage systems, connected by SAN switches to create a high availability mirrored environment.
whitepaper Product Specs: ProCurve Switch 2510 Series2006-12-06 06:10:41 Hewlett-Packard
The ProCurve Switch 2510-24 is a managed, Layer-2, 24-port 10/100 switch with two dual-personality Gigabit ports providing 10/100/1000-T or mini-GBIC connectivity. The 2510-24 is fanless, ensuring quiet operation and making it ideal for deployment in open spaces. And it offers a basic Layer-2 feature set, including access security and basic traffic prioritization. Designed to cost-effectively meet the needs of small and growing networks, the 2510-24 brings commercial-grade quality to all businesses at an affordable price. It is also standards-based, facilitating interoperability with existing infrastructure and making it easy to deploy and manage.
whitepaper Telstra Improves Efficiency With Simplified Development Environment2006-12-06 01:00:24 Oracle
Telstra's data centers are responsible for managing the network records of the company's sprawling resources, which include everything from old copper wiring to the latest high-density optical fiber cables, cable, and satellite links. Compounding the issue for the centers was that they were experiencing an increasing array of problems with the incumbent desktop database platforms. The current databases lacked scalability and reliability, while deployment and maintenance of 'Fat client' desktop software was proving burdensome. Telstra was eager to consolidate its distributed desktop database setup into a centralized environment. This was achieved by combining applications from the seven data centers into a single Oracle 10g Database running on Red Hat Linux and low-cost Intel hardware.
whitepaper The Middleware [R]evolution2007-01-12 16:21:14 Oracle
How did middleware evolve from a necessary evil—proprietary plumbing that glued disparate systems together—to one of the most strategic areas of IT and business today? Enter SOA. Service-oriented architectures get many of their core services directly from middleware. Those services include:
  • Security functionality
  • Deployment and management capabilities
  • Business intelligence
  • Content and collaboration tools
  • Portal capabilities
To learn more about the important role that middleware plays within an SOA, read this short white paper from Oracle.

whitepaper Faster Backups and Restores With Disk-Based Backup Symantec Backup Exec 11d for Windows Servers Disk-Based Backup Solution With ExaGrid Systems2007-01-23 01:00:26 ExaGrid Systems
This white paper outlines the key benefits of backup to disk functionality, as well as how the new technology has solved data-protection issues that affected previous generations of disk-backup solutions. It covers how Backup Exec software's backup to disk functionality meets the data management challenges of today's IT organizations, including reducing the cost of disk-based backup in conjunction with ExaGrid. Finally, it provides an overview of disk-based solutions and then a detailed discussion of its benefits in practice, through the presentation of three real world usage scenarios.
whitepaper Introducing XenEnterprise Volume Virtualization Via Next Generation of Server Virtualization: A XenSource Whitepaper2006-11-29 Boston
The business case for virtualization is based on an industry-wide focus on server consolidation, a need for enhanced flexibility and responsiveness of IT assets, and high availability of critical infrastructure applications. But in spite of an impressive growth rate, server virtualization has yet to become main stream. Today's proprietary virtualization products are largely deployed in test and development and for consolidation of non-performance critical production workloads, but are rarely if ever used for business-critical roles. Mainly because the virtualization market place until now has lacked open solutions, offered limited hardware vendor support and operating system vendor support, and lacked the tools to enable effective virtual servers.

whitepaper Live Webcast: How to Avoid Virtualization Gotchas2006-11-11 01:00:15 Acronis
Server virtualization is hot, and for good reason. Virtualization enables computers to run multiple operating systems and applications on the same physical server. The benefits to IT managers are compelling. However, there are a number of hidden "gotchas" that can thwart IT's efforts to migrate existing applications to a virtual environment and can threaten the stability of mission-critical applications.

Join this live TechRepublic Webcast, hosted by James Hilliard and featuring Walter Scott, CEO of Acronis Software, to learn how:

  • Hardware resources can be consolidated onto fewer servers
  • IT organizations can scale their server resources
  • IT staff resources can be deployed more efficiently
  • Legacy applications can be redeployed to virtual machines, extending application life and increasing performance
  • Security can be improved when the operating system doesn't communicate directly with the host

Gartner calls virtualization a "megatrend" and International Data Corp. forecasts that spending for virtualization will reach $15 billion by 2009. So join this TechRepublic Webcast, sponsored by Acronis and featuring live Q&A, to learn how you can avoid a variety of virtualization "gotchas." Pre-register today!

Note: This TechRepublic Webcast will be recorded and made available on an on-demand basis following the live event. So pre-register today--even if you're not sure you can attend on November 21st--and we'll notify you by e-mail when the on-demand version is available.

whitepaper Overcoming Challenges in Managing Linux2006-11-04 01:00:15 Levanta
The introduction of Linux brought the promise of a new level of cost-efficiency and flexibility in enterprise IT environments. But as Linux systems scale, management becomes unwieldy. The prohibitive cost of managing large installations over time -- making sure every single server is running right, even up to thousands of servers -- has gotten in the way of achieving Linux's full potential.

The challenges include massive heterogeneity, sheer volume of equipment and data, and lack of nimble management tools. Learn more about a new administration model with innovative technology that breaks down the barriers allowing you to get the most out of your Linux systems with the least amount of effort. whitepaper Top 5 Strategies for Managing Linux2006-11-04 01:00:15 Levanta
The Linux universe is blessed with a flexibility and diversity that is practically unparalleled in the technology world. While this blessing has a number of benefits, too much of a good thing can lead to management headaches. The issue of over-diversification in a managed Linux environment takes two general flavors: customization of the Linux distribution(s) themselves and too many different installed distributions. Find out how to best manage Linux and meet challenges head-on. Download this white paper now.
