Project Management: Still More Art Than Science | 2005-03-15 | PMFORUM |
| Project managers must have the appropriate processes, tools, and techniques at their fingertips to deliver projects. A key resource to many project managers today is the Project Management Institutes Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), which provides the manager with generally accepted processes, tools, and techniques of project management. It groups the processes into nine knowledge areas, detailing what is required by the process (the inputs), what occurs during the process, and the deliverables of the process (the outputs). This paper merely provides the project manager with a guide; the appropriate implementation of these processes, tools, and techniques on a given project is another challenge.

Multi-dimensional Project Management: Maintaining Control in a Complex Environment | 2004-12-01 | Exact Software |
| By definition, corporations are involved in Multi-dimensional Project Management when having to manage many levels and facets of organizational components in order to achieve a desired goal. The many dimensions within corporate projects include documents, resources (whether they be internal or external), budgets, departments, assets, risks, schedules and activities. Each component must be associated with one another under the overall project umbrella, necessitated by both a strategic and detailed view across all projects within the enterprise.
Organizations are multi-project systems themselves that must remain organic in order to adapt to circumstances. Day-to-day operations by default consist of complex, multi-layered projects which, unless managed by the proper tools and technology in a comprehensive, proficient manner, could curtail and degenerate a companyÂ’s expected performance and results. This paper discusses the evolution, methods and resulting problems that emanate from Multi-dimensional Project Management and offers a conclusive answer to those issues. When Bad Things Happen to Good Projects | 2004-12-01 | IDG (International Data Group) |
| It goes against human nature to always expect the worst. But with IT projects, pessimism - otherwise known as contingency planning - is the only way to keep small technology problems from becoming full-blown business disasters. IT project management has become high art while business contingency planning remains in the Dark Ages. But the problems that can affect an enterprise software project increase all the time as the projects encompass more code and more business processes. In the end, it is riskier for companies to try to protect themselves from glitches in enterprise software projects through ever better IT project management techniques than it is to plan for manual workarounds to get products to customers in case of failure.
