Streamlined and Sustainable: The Dynamic Enterprise: The Role of ICT in Realizing the Business Benefits of Eco-Sustainability | 2008-09-16 | Alcatel-Lucent |
| By focusing in a holistic way on organizational priorities that integrate the network, people, processes and knowledge, 'green' initiatives can marry eco-sustainability with core operational and strategic objectives. Applications such as teleworking, videoconferencing and others both reduce energy requirements (helping enterprises meet their environmental targets) and contribute to improved efficiency and effectiveness. Given that such solutions belong to the realm of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), IT departments have a central role to play in helping their organizations pursue their mission-critical objectives. | |||

Gartner Report: Quantifying the Value of Green Storage Technologies | 2008-09-05 | 3Par |
| Most disk storage features that vendors have labeled as "green" were initially developed to increase utilization rates, to optimize storage system resource usage, to improve staff productivity or to encourage storage consolidation. Later, as power, cooling and facilities issues grew in importance, vendors responded by emphasizing the "green" aspects of these storage features. These newly minted "green" storage features are identified, and their effects on acquisition costs, power, cooling and operational efficiency are explained in this research. Organizations are also provided with methodologies that enable them to quantify the savings that each feature can deliver in their environments.

Energy Efficiency in the Data Center: Exploring the Inherent Compatibility of Green Initiatives and Corporate Profitability | 2008-09-01 | Hewlett-Packard (HP) |
| There was a time, not long ago, when the primary responsibility of the IT infrastructure and those who ran it was to provide continuous availability. Perpetual uptime. Unrelenting reliability. Whatever it took to keep commerce humming along without interruption. Today, though, it is seeing environmental responsibility gain visibility as a business issue. In the face of increasing pressures on the world - population growth, economic development, and climate change, to name but a few - customers, stakeholders, and analysts are making it clear that they expect companies to consider sustainability and to act upon it.

Building a Greener IT Department: Eco-Friendly Changes Can Yield Real Benefits | 2008-08-05 | IBM |
| Going green can offer companies a wide range of benefits. Some choose to go green to reduce their impact on the environment; others want to reduce operating costs through energy efficiency. Making green changes requires a total company commitment, starting at the highest rungs of the corporate ladder. The promise of lower costs is usually a good argument to make, and many organizations are finding that environmental management and energy efficiency are key criteria used by clients and stakeholders to evaluate a company. The case for becoming greener may even come from senior managers who are driven by higher energy costs or from a marketing decision to appear more environmentally conscious.

Going Green: A Strategic Guide to Green IT Management | 2008-08-01 | Enterprise Management Associates |
| Green IT solutions have established themselves as important - and in some cases, critical - deployments for increasing energy efficiencies in order to reduce operational costs, achieve power utilization objectives and ensure sustainable value in IT investments. Rising energy costs and, in some cases, limited power availability are driving institutions to find solutions that will ensure long-term sustainability for IT assets that are essential to on-going business success and profitability. Nonetheless, with the increased number of available solutions, it is often unclear to IT managers which green IT implementations will maximize their energy efficiency to achieve business goals. | |||

Power Shift to Green Storage: Establishing a Long Term Eco-Sustainable Storage Strategy | 2008-07-31 | ITCentrix |
| This paper investigates the practical requirement of setting in place a green strategy for storage as part of a wider context of a green IT strategy. The paper argues that "Light Green" strategies that reduce carbon have to be coupled with "Dark green" strategies that save money. It further argues that these strategies should be implemented as a matter of urgency; failing to act is likely to damage the reputation of IT and inhibit the ability of IT to drive change. From a business perspective, the debate about global warming has ended. Whatever the merits of the debate, there is a business consensus that the world community is moving toward mandating the reduction of carbon emissions.

Greener IT, Greener Education | 2008-07-22 | Hewlett-Packard (HP) |
| Because of all the trends, green IT is moving up the agenda of IT professionals in higher and further education. In a recent poll3 of members by Universities and Colleges Information Systems Association (UCISA), it was the third most important concern. However, when members were asked where they were spending their time and money, it didn't make the top ten. One possible explanation is that institutions are looking for vendors to help them reduce the environmental impact of their IT as they replace and upgrade their hardware. Energy efficiency and carbon footprint have a high profile, but the education sector is also focusing on its broader environmental impact. There is a widespread commitment to increased recycling. |
