Converged Solutions white paper from Stratecast/Frost & Sullivan 2008-06-06 Sprint

In the communications industry, convergence refers to the integration of communication - voice, video, and data - onto a single (IP-based) network. From convergence, more advanced and efficient means of communication emerge.

This paper from Stratecast describes the attributes of a true customer-centric convergence solution. From these attributes, a framework to measure and compare communication service providers' (CSPs') convergence solutions is constructed. The paper concludes with an attribute review of Sprint's approach to true convergence.

Design, Implementation and Evaluation of a QoS-Aware Transport Protocol 2008-06-04 University of New South Wales

In the context of a reconfigurable transport protocol framework, the paper proposes a QoS-aware Transport Protocol (QSTP), specifically designed to operate over QoS-enabled networks with bandwidth guarantee. QSTP combines QoS-aware TFRC congestion control mechanism, which takes into account the network-level bandwidth reservations, with a Selective ACKnowledgment (SACK) mechanism in order to provide a QoS-aware transport service that fill the gap between QoS enabled network services and QoS constraint applications. The paper has developed a prototype of this protocol in the user-space and conducted a large range of measurements to evaluate this proposal under various network conditions.

RAD's Pseudowire Gateways Reduce Communications Costs 2008-05-21 RAD Data Communications

Yorkshire Water has won many awards for customer service and holds the British government's Charter Mark for Service Excellence. The company wanted to reduce leased line costs while retaining proven voice switches by carrying voice traffic over a packet-switched core network. Yorkshire Water deployed RAD's TDMoIP pseudowire gateways, which convert synchronous TDM voice and signaling traffic into packets for transmission over IP or any other packet switched infrastructure.

Addressing Heterogeneity, Scalability, and Privacy in Layered Multicast Congestion Control 2008-05-15 AT&T Labs-Research

Multicast is attracting a resurgence of interest because it has a potential to address the explosively growing need for efficient streaming of large-volume Internet content. However, to realize the potential, large-scale multicast distribution requires effective congestion control. This paper designs SIM, a protocol that combines three distinct mechanisms (Selective participation, Intra-group transmission adjustment, and Menu adaptation) to provide a general solution for efficient fair scalable privacy-preserving multicast congestion control with heterogeneous receivers. Whereas the individual mechanisms have appeared in earlier multicast protocols, the main contribution lies in the cohesive integration of the techniques. SIM achieves such integration by operating the three mechanisms at different timescales and distributing the responsibility for control to different entities in the network.
