802.11n: The End of Ethernet? | 2009-09-14 | Burton Group |
| The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11n standard represents the beginning of the end for wired Ethernet as the dominant Local Area Network (LAN) access technology in the enterprise. Over the next few years, refinements in system silicon, radio design, network control, wireless security, and power management will improve 802.11n and its successor products to the point where they will begin to erode the switched Ethernet market.

The State of 802.11n | 2009-09-01 | Meru Networks |
| With the ratification of 802.11n, wireless LANs are finally coming of age. Though its status as an official IEEE standard is new, the technology is mature and proven. The 802.11n specification is built upon the foundation laid ten years ago by 802.11b and improved in subsequent years with higher speeds, new network architectures, new radio technology and standards that advance security, quality of service and management.

Location-Based Services for Cellular Phones Using Wi-Fi: The University of Cincinnati's System for Emergency Call Location | 2009-09-01 | Aruba Networks |
| Virtually every new smartphone coming to market now has Wi-Fi functionality, and Wi-Fi is preferred for data services due to its high performance and low cost. Many universities already offer Wi-Fi in lecture theaters, cafes and residence halls, and are now expanding their WLANs to cover their entire campus. This paper describes a novel system developed by the University of Cincinnati which enables on-campus location-based services for conventional voice calls from cell phones by recognizing and locating the Wi-Fi signal associated with the handset via the campus WLAN.

White Space Networking With Wi-Fi Like Connectivity | 2009-08-21 | Association for Computing Machinery |
| Networking over UHF white spaces is fundamentally different from conventional Wi-Fi along three axes: spatial variation, temporal variation, and fragmentation of the UHF spectrum. Each of these differences gives rise to new challenges for implementing a wireless network in this band. The paper presents the design and implementation of WhiteFi, the first Wi-Fi like system constructed on top of UHF white spaces. WhiteFi incorporates a new adaptive spectrum assignment algorithm to handle spectrum variation and fragmentation, and proposes a low overhead protocol to handle temporal variation. WhiteFi builds on a simple technique, called SIFT, that reduces the time to detect transmissions in variable channel width systems by analyzing raw signals in the time domain.

How a Spanning Tree Works | 2009-06-23 | Global Knowledge |
| The way a switch learns Ethernet (MAC) addresses is by inspecting the Ethernet frame and recording the source MAC address in a dynamic table. The switch will also associate a learned MAC address with a port. It can then make intelligent forwarding decisions based on the destination MAC address. This white paper illustrates the process. This white paper focuses on Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), IEEE Standard 802.11, and addresses the functions of an Ethernet LAN switch.

Designed for Speed: Network Infrastructure in an 802.11n World | 2009-06-22 | Aruba Networks |
| The IEEE 802.11n standard and Wi-Fi Alliance 802.11n certification herald a new world for enterprise wireless networks. 802.11n brings significantly higher data rates and more reliable coverage than previous Wi-Fi technology: it represents a significant upgrade in performance. The first Wi-Fi Alliance 802.11n draft-2.0' certification, dating from June 2007, was based on a snapshot of the then-unfinished IEEE 802.11n specification.

Case Study: D-Link Brings Affordable, Single Network Wi-Fi Solution to Redeemer University College for Enhanced Internet Access and Reliability | 2009-06-18 | D-Link |
| Redeemer University College is an undergraduate Christian liberal arts and science university committed to academic excellence. Redeemer University College was being hindered by its spotty, unreliable Wi-Fi network that was patched together with random access points and lacked central communication. Faced with tight budget requirements, the school set out to deploy a universal wireless solution that would blanket the 90-acre campus - including academic buildings, student dorms, the auditorium, gymnasium and several outlying structures - under a single network integration. Vanderkolk and his network associate installed one D-Link DWS-3026 control switch and 48 D-Link DWL-3500AP access points during the summer, calling the process "A piece of cake." The total wireless solution offers many benefits to Redeemer both from a student and administrative standpoint.
