whitepaper Network Operating System Evolution08/10/08 Juniper Networks
This paper discusses the requirements and challenges inherent in the design of carrier-class network operating system (OS). Key facets of JUNOS™ software, the Juniper Networks OS, are used to illustrate the evolution of OS design and underscore the relationship between functionality and architectural decisions.

The challenge of designing a contemporary network operating system is examined from different angles, including flexibility, ability to power a wide range of platforms, nonstop operation, and parallelism. Architectural challenges, trade-offs and opportunities are identified, as well as some of the best practices in building state-of-the-art network operating systems.

whitepaper Group-Aware Stream Filtering for Bandwidth-Efficient Data Dissemination2008-03-06 Dartmouth College
This paper is concerned with disseminating high-volume data streams to many simultaneous applications over a low-bandwidth wireless mesh network. For bandwidth efficiency, they propose a group-aware stream filtering approach, used in conjunction with multicasting, that exploits two overlooked, yet important, properties of these applications, many applications can tolerate some degree of "Slack" in their data quality requirements, and there may exist multiple subsets of the source data satisfying the quality needs of an application. This paper also analyzes the key factors that affect its performance, based on testing with heterogeneous filtering requirements.

whitepaper Oracle Real User Experience Insight2008-03-01 Oracle
UXinsight is a powerful solution for monitoring Web traffic. Data capture is based on Network Protocol Analysis (NPA). Typically, it is installed before the Web servers, behind a firewall in the DMZ, and required minimal maintenance. UXinsight is "invisible" to the monitored networks and completely secure. Installation of an UXinsight system requires no changes to a Web infrastructure or website content. A standard UXinsight system can be operational within an hour. UXinsight provides an easy-to-use browser interface where one can correlate different information in a simple way. To create reports, one simply selects an interesting view within the browser interface, and clicks a single button.
whitepaper State of Indiana Saves $14 Million, Boosts IT Reliability, Offers New Services for Residents2008-03-01 Microsoft Tips
In 2005, the state of Indiana embarked on an optimization of its core IT infrastructure to dramatically improve service levels while reducing cost. The state replaced a highly decentralized series of e mail solutions running on 100 server computers with Microsoft Exchange Server software running on two 4-computer clusters. Hundreds of desktop applications - including many older applications that were causing conflicts with current software - were virtualized using Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack. And software deployments, security updates, asset inventory, and remote help-desk support were enabled by a move from Altiris Notification Server to Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007.
