whitepaper Small IT Solutions Shop Offers Clients Big Security, Improves Reliability 100%2008-03-12 Microsoft
Quality Systems Solutions, Inc one key component of its operation was a separate sandbox network using SBS 2003 R2. This network was hosted on a The Planet - based server in Texas, far from the local Illinois office, and was used for demonstrations of several SBS remote features, including Microsoft Outlook Anywhere, Company web and Windows Mobile 5 or later. However, it was less effective for demonstrating small office LAN features, such as local logon and file/print sharing - and this was a challenge the team was eager to address. The company deployed Windows Server 2008, Standard on two servers.

whitepaper Parc De Vilgenis College Selects Allied Telesis to Build a Powerful Network Connecting 3000 People and 11 Remote Buildings2008-03-12 Allied Telesis
Parc de Vilgenis College's network was a single non-segmented Layer 2 network. They wanted to implement a new scalable network architecture that would meet their needs, both in terms of functionality and security. The challenge was to improve the reliability and security of their applications by segmenting their network - a complex project due to the large amount of user diversity, and the site's physical architecture. Parc de Vilgenis College's deployed Allied Telesis for its solution with a Layer 3 network, segmenting their network into Virtual LANs (VLANs) to optimize traffic flows, and in particular to secure administrative data.

whitepaper The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company Uses WildPackets' OmniPeek2008-01-22 WildPackets
Goodyear manufactures tires, engineered rubber products and chemicals in more than 80 facilities in 28 countries. The company wanted to consolidate its set of network monitoring, analysis, and troubleshooting tools, and shortening find-to-fix times for network problems. In addition to consolidating multi-topology analysis under one product, OmniPeek allows Goodyear to look at packets live while tracing problems - the only tool evaluated that could do this. OmniPeek enables remote analysis of any LAN, WLAN or WAN segment from a single console, and improves IT engineer productivity with an intuitive interface. OmniPeek helps Goodyear do what it takes to remain the tire industry leader.

whitepaper How Cisco IT Builds End-to-End QoS Into Its Network2007-12-18 Cisco Systems
By 2003, Cisco IT - propelled by both business and technology drivers - was ready to develop a second version of QoS, referred to internally as QoS V2. They needed a comprehensive, end-to-end solution that addressed the network consistently across user devices from the LAN edge to the enterprise WAN edge. Keeping in mind its primary goal of building QoS based on trusted network edges, the Cisco IT design team established other requirements for QoS V2, including: Consistent performance and management standards across the LAN and WAN networks, the lowest-possible latency for voice applications, the ability to limit bandwidth consumption by large data transfers during times of traffic congestion etc.

whitepaper Singular Spectrum Analysis of Traffic Workload in a Large-Scale Wireless LAN2007-10-26 Association for Computing Machinery
Network traffic load in an IEEE802.11 infrastructure arises from the superposition of traffic accessed by wireless clients associated with Access Points (APs). An accurate characterization of these data can be beneficial in modelling network traffic and addressing a variety of problems including cover-age planning, resource reservation and network monitoring for anomaly detection. This study focuses on the statistical analysis of the traffic load measured in a campus-wide IEEE802.11 infrastructure at each AP. Using the Singular Spectrum Analysis approach, one found that the time-series of traffic load at a given AP has a small intrinsic dimension. In particular, these time-series can be accurately modelled using a small number of leading (principal) components.

whitepaper Passive and Accurate Traffic Load Estimation for Infrastructure-Mode Wireless LAN2007-10-26 Stony Brook University
The exponential increase in the deployment of IEEE 802.11-based Wireless LAN (WLAN) technology has transformed it into an essential building block of the networking infrastructure of commercial enterprises. How to effectively manage these WLAN networks and stop malicious intruders are the two main barriers for further spread of this technology. At the same time, the enormous economies of scale behind IEEE 802.11-basedWLAN products also result in rapid technological advances and astounding pricing efficiencies. This paper describes the design, implementation, and evaluation of a scalable wireless LAN traffic monitoring system called WIreless Network senTRY (Wintry), which provides real-time visibility of the usage of an enterprise's wireless links in a way that is completely transparent to the monitored WLAN networks.

whitepaper Identity-Based Policy Enforcement: A LAN Security Best Practices Whitepaper2007-10-18 Nevis Networks
This paper focuses on the evolving nature of LAN security in today's enterprise in light of a dissolving network perimeter and the need for an identity-based solution to address new requirements. Network security policies arise from compliance and risk management initiatives across multiple lines of business throughout the organization. Security, compliance and business requirements are articulated in a readable policy built up from basic identity, role and group definitions, or can be read as network security access decisions that are mapped to user profiles. Identity is at the core of enterprise policies. Network infrastructure, and network security solutions built on top of the infrastructure, is not identity-aware, since network packet headers provide information about machine addresses and location, not user information.
