Artificial Neural Networks Architecture for Intrusion Detection Systems and Classification of Attacks | 2007-02-24 | Cairo University |
| The ubiquity of the Internet poses serious concerns on the security of computer infrastructures and the integrity of sensitive data. Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) aim at protecting networks and computers from malicious network-based or host-based attacks. The underlying assumption of intrusion detection is an attack will noticeably affect system performance or behavior. Neural networks method is a promising technique, which has been used in many classification problems. The present study is aimed to solve a multi-class problem of intrusion detection using MLP in which not only the attack records are distinguished from normal ones, but also the attack type is identified.

IT @ Intel Brief: Boosting Server Virtualization Performance | 2007-02-01 | VMware |
| With each new generation of Intel®
multi-core technology, anticipate dramatic power and performance improvements; these improvements directly contribute to lower TCO. Better performance per acquisition cost and performance per watt, for example, result in lower capital expenditures and smaller utility bills.
This IT @ Intel brief examines a study of correlated workload performance, platform performance, and power consumed with financial data to determine TCO. With this methodology, Intel demonstrated as much as a 2x performance improvement and up to 53 percent reduction in TCO for the Dual-Core Intel Xeon processor 5150 as compared to its predecessor. Consider remote access and IP address management in your Active Directory network design | 2007-01-24 | Syngress |
| The methods used to gain remote access into your organization's network and manage IP address management for remote access can impact the implementation of Active Directory and should therefore be carefully considered in your network infrastructure design. In this sample chapter from How to Cheat at Designing a Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Infrastructure, investigate remote access and IP address management as they apply to the Active Directory and to security. Start with a discussion of remote access, the available methods, and the locations from which remote access must be provided. Explore the implications of an RAS deployment with respect to Active Directory, the policies that are available for uses as well as the machines, the chosen authentication strategy, and how it is to be implemented. Then, study IP address management and the use of DHCP, including how IP addresses and subnets should be mapped to DHCP scopes (and/or superscopes), which are then used to assign IP address and configuration data to clients on the associated subnet. End with a review of best practices for DHCP placement and failover and redundancy strategies, as well as the integration of DHCP with DNS.

Lessons from Independent Research: Choosing an SSL VPN | 2007-05-31 12:16:35 | Aventail |
| Many companies are choosing SSL VPNs over IPSec-based systems because there's no client software to install and because they offer more granular access to enterprise applications. But with so many options to choose from, how can you tell which SSL VPN is right for your organization?
Check out this TechRepublic Webcast, now available on demand and featuring noted analyst Robert Whiteley of Forrester Research, who explains what you need to consider when evaluating SSL VPNs. Author of the respected Forrester Wave report on SSL VPN appliances, Whiteley discusses:

Managing Distributed Collaboration in a Peer-to-Peer Network | 2007-01-09 | MAYA DESIGN |
| Shared mutable information objects called u-forms provide an attractive foundation on which to build collaborative systems. As one scales up such systems from small fully-connected workgroups to large, highly distributed, and partially disconnected groups, the paper has found that peer-to-peer technology and optimistic replication strategies provide a cost-effective mechanism for maintaining good performance. Unfortunately, such systems present well-known coordination and consistency problems. This paper discusses strategies for addressing those difficulties at different levels of the system design, focusing on providing solutions in the information architecture rather than at the infrastructure layer. Addressing problems at this higher layer allows greater freedom in design, and simplifies moving from one infrastructural base to another as technology evolves.
