Overcoming the Challenges of WAN Application Delivery | 2009-02-10 | |
| Today's Small-to-Medium size Enterprises (SME) rely heavily on their business applications being sent reliably over the Internet, outside of their LAN. These applications can include inventory, customer relationship management, sales, accounting and other critical applications that are the livelihood of a company's operations. Therefore, quick and reliable delivery of these applications to users is a major challenge for today's IT departments. To achieve greater productivity, local employees, telecommuters, business partners and customers must all have unhindered access to critical applications. Any delay in delivering these applications, or deficiency in the availability and security of the applications, can cause user productivity to suffer and adversely affect business profitability.

Killer Fabrics for Scalable Datacenters | 2009-02-06 | Hewlett-Packard (HP) |
| Large-scale datacenters are rapidly increasing in number and size to satisfy computing and storage needs for globally connected businesses and the World Wide Web. 10Gb/s Ethernet is now being adopted to meet increasing bandwidth needs for in-datacenter communications. However, most datacenter network architectures are still based on specialized hierarchical edge-core topologies which are costly to build, difficult to maintain and consume large amounts of power. This paper describes enhancements to Layer two Ethernet switches that support multipath L2 routing for scalable datacenters. This enables a cost-effective scalable network architecture based on enhanced layer two Ethernet switches. The architecture provides multipath routing for Ethernet while preserving important Ethernet features and interoperability with traditional Ethernet gear.

Cisco Visual Networking Index: Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast Update | 2009-01-29 | Cisco Systems |
| The Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast Update is part of the comprehensive Cisco VNI Forecast, an ongoing initiative to track and forecast the impact of visual networking applications. This paper presents some of Cisco's key global mobile traffic projections and growth trends. Mobile voice service is already considered a necessity by many, and mobile data, video, and TV are now becoming an essential part of consumers' lives. Mobile subscribers are growing rapidly and bandwidth demand due to data/video is increasing. Mobile M2M connections continue to increase.

Disaster Recovery White Paper: Reducing the Bandwidth to Keep Remote Sites Constantly Up-to-Date | 2009-01-20 | DataCore Software |
| Although the consolidation from discrete physical servers to virtual servers has made it possible for many organizations to configure an affordable remote Disaster Recovery (DR) site, the inter-site traffic to keep the DR location current soon grows to be a problem. The volume of updates from newly created virtual machines at the primary site can rapidly climb to the point where they exceed the line's capacity to transmit them. The overload causes the DR site to fall behind more and more, exposing companies to unacceptable data loss in the event of a disaster. Some customers' first thoughts were to upgrade to higher speed lines.

Operating XMPP Over Radio and Satellite Networks | 2009-01-07 | Isode |
| XMPP, the Internet Standard eXtensible Messaging and Presence Protocol is being widely adopted for Instant Messaging (IM), Group Chat and Presence services in military networks. This paper starts by looking at the military tactical requirements for IM, Group Chat and Presence. It discusses briefly why XMPP is ideal for these services, and also as a building block for situational awareness systems and in support of voice and video communication. Tactical networks often need to make use of Radio and Satellite networks with constrained bandwidth, high latency and difficult operational characteristics. This paper looks at the problems of deploying XMPP over such networks, and shows how XMPP can be effectively deployed in such environments.

Pathfinder Designs Test Tracking Software for a Country's Standardized Testing Program | 2009-01-01 | Pathfinder Development |
| In an Arabic Gulf State, Pathfinder and its client, a large Research and Data Analysis firm, are helping transform the educational system. Part of the vision for the new system was the implementation of a standardized testing program administered over a four-week period at several hundred schools. To manage the logistics of this testing program, an application was needed to monitor the status and location of over a million exam and answer books. The application needed to be usable for both Arabic speakers and English speakers with varied education and experience levels. Pathfinder was brought in to create the user models and user interfaces for the application, including the user interface to a hardware bar code scanner, which was critical to achieve the needed processing bandwidth for the exams.

Choosing the Right Thin Clients for Your System I (iSeries) | 2009-01-01 | BOSaNOVA |
| In the beginning, thin-client terminals booted from a server, had very slow CPUs with small amounts of memory, and relied on application servers to provide needed features. It is no surprise that these early thin clients didn't take off because delivery was poor (high bandwidth requirements, low color support, no sound, etc.) and the application servers themselves didn't support applications very well. Over the last few years, the story has changed. Thin clients have been enhanced to support faster CPUs, faster video, and increased and faster memory. Today, popular software applications typically work well in a terminal server environment, application server software has improved significantly, and server hardware prices have plummeted. All of these factors have contributed to the surge in demand for thin clients.

Special Services School District Empowers Disabled Students Using a 3Com Enterprise Network Solution | 2009-01-01 | 3Com |
| One of the most progressive special education systems in the United States, Mercer County Special Services School District of Trenton, New Jersey, provides 750-plus seriously disabled students from 18 communities with an advanced special education curricula well beyond the means of local school districts. Mercer County Special Services School District sought to upgrade its network with high-speed, scalable switches that would deliver the bandwidth, security, and ease of management it required. After evaluating the marketplace, the district concluded that the 3Com Switch 8810 and Switch 5500G best met these criteria. The district worked with 3Com reseller ePlus Technology of Herdon, VA to complete the installation in August 2005 and contracted 3Com Global Services to maintain it.
