whitepaper VMScope - A Virtual Multicast VPN Performance Monitor2006-09-15 Association for Computing Machinery
The growth of one-to-many applications in enterprise networks is fueling the demand for VPNs to support multicast applications. The deployment of such a Multicast VPN service creates the need for appropriate management tools and techniques including performance monitoring, problem isolation and troubleshooting. This paper presents the MVPN monitoring problem, identify requirements for solutions to the problem, and describe VMScope, a virtual MVPN performance monitor designed to facilitate provider monitoring and debugging of the MVPN service.

whitepaper MAC Layer Multicast in Wireless Multihop Networks0000-00-00 Stony Brook University
Many applications in wireless ad-hoc networks require multicast communication. In order to provide efficient multicast, various multicast routing protocols have been designed in recent years to facilitate formation of routes between multicast senders and receivers. There has also been some work to develop a suitable MAC protocol to improve efficiency of multicast communication. The work discussed in this paper explores some approaches for reliable multicast at the MAC layer. A multicast extension of IEEE 802.11 protocol is developed and its performance is evaluated. The protocol is implemented in the popular ns-2 simulator and experiments are performed with multicast routing protocol.

whitepaper QoS Multicast Routing Based on Bandwidth Estimation in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks2006-05-11 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
The need for supporting real time and multimedia applications for users of Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) is becoming essential. Mobile ad hoc networks can provide multimedia users with mobility they demand, if efficient QoS multicast strategies were developed. This paper has extended QMR to make it more effective than the previous work. They propose a cross-layer framework to support QoS multicasting. They have enhanced the IEEE 802.11 MAC layer to estimate the available bandwidth at each node. The results of simulation reflect a good packet delivery ratio associated with lower control overhead and lower packet delivery delay.

whitepaper Sprint Global Quality of Service: Guarantor of Application Delivery2006-04-01 Sprint
This Sprint white paper discusses a variety of issues related to application delivery and performance. It explains how a Quality of Service (QoS) approach to network management that focuses on the performance of applications rather than the performance of the network itself can help you achieve a data delivery rate of better than 99.9 percent! Download the paper to learn how Sprint's Global MPLS VPN, a 100-percent Cisco-powered network that's virtually congestion-free, can deliver enhanced QoS across your entire environment, no matter how distributed it may be.

whitepaper Cisco IOS Secure Multicast2006-03-01 Cisco Systems
Cisco IOS Secure Multicast is a set of hardware and software features necessary to secure IP Multicast group traffic originating on or flowing through a Cisco IOS device. It combines the keying protocol Group Domain Of Interpretation (GDOI) with hardware-based IP security (IPsec) encryption to provide users an efficient method to secure IP Multicast group traffic. With Cisco IOS Secure Multicast, a router can apply encryption to IP Multicast traffic without having to configure tunnels.

whitepaper Unlimited mobile TV for the mass market2006-02-10 alcatel
Mobile TV is already booming on existing cellular infrastructures in unicast mode. But unicast is not optimized to deliver the same content to many users at the same time, and this prevents mass-market deployment. Overlay broadcast networks are necessary for mass access to mainstream TV channels through mobile devices.

For the broadcast part of the solution, Alcatel proposes to combine satellite and terrestrial infrastructure, enabling indoor, nationwide coverage while operating in a readily available frequency band. The unicast part of the solution will use the existing 3G networks to increase the number of available TV channels.

This paper explains the technical intricacies of the different aspects of this solution, describing their capabilities, scope of application, maturity, and the regulatory situations.

whitepaper Multicast for Mobile Networks2006-01-01 Cisco Systems
Videoconferencing, e-learning, software distribution - these are all applications that can benefit from multicast, the bandwidth-conserving technology that allows a host to send packets to a subset of all hosts as a group transmission. Third-Generation (3G) multicast applications in mobile networks face different challenges than those in wireline networks. Cellular networks are point-to-point and multicast does not scale well as a point-to-point service. This paper presents the different emerging multicast standards and protocols, their capabilities, and state of current adoption by mobile operators with CDMA and GPRS Networks. Cisco supports multicast services over an IP or common IP/MPLS backbone and RAN built on Cisco products and solutions.

whitepaper DPOCS: A Dynamic Proxy Architecture for Video Streaming Based on Overlay Network2005-09-25 Sharif University of Technology
In this paper, a new dynamic proxy solution based on overlay multicasting network for layered video streaming is presented. In the proposed approach, all clients in an Internet service provider network interested in receiving a video stream, provided by a media server in the Internet, organize themselves into an overlay tree. The root of the overlay tree acts as a proxy and receives video stream from original server and distributes it in the local overlay tree. In addition to introducing a new architecture, the main contribution in this paper is proposing a number of distributed protocols for construction and improvement of local overlay tree in video streaming applications.
