QLogic Switches Give CNBC an Edge With Improved Production Time | 2007-07-01 | QLogic |
| To compete with other networks, CNBC makes programming compelling by providing a daily stream of animation, illustrations, and designs that vividly explain the business world to viewers. Each production staff member used a Mac Pro workstation with local storage and a 4TB Apple Xsan file server for shared files. But the storage system was slow and lacked sufficient throughput to handle all production workflow. CNBC deployed primary and backup Storage Area Network (SAN), each with a QLogic SANbox 9000 Fibre Channel Switch, two Apple Xserve servers, and an 18TB Apple Xsan file system; both SANs are connected via Fibre Channel to an Apple Xserve server that provides the mirroring function between the two SANs; 10 Apple Mac Pro workstations.

Digital Media Projects Streams High Definition Content With NETGEAR | 0000-00-00 | Netgear |
| Digital Media Projects (DMP) designs and develops leading-edge, triple-play products to provide television, telephone and broadband services for hospitality, education, residential and corporate environments. DMP's growing subscriber base meant that the company needed to ensure that each of its customers' in-house IT systems had the necessary backbone and speed required to handle the increasing volume of content coming through the network. DMP turned to NETGEAR to evaluate its ProSafe line of business-class networking products. NETGEAR reviewed the needs of DMP and its customers and suggested the FSM7328S ProSafe 24-port 10/100 L3 Managed Stackable Switch with 4 gigabit ports as a solution.

Oracle 10g Release 2 Performance and Tuning on an IBM System p Linux on POWER Platform | 2007-06-30 | IBM |
| This paper discusses performance considerations when setting up an Oracle Database 10g Release 2 on Linux on POWER (LoP) platforms. Recent Linux kernel enhancements such as huge page support, IBM POWER5+ 64 KB pages, libhugetlbfs, Fibre Channel and network adapter enhancements and other kernel processor tunings can be deployed to bring enterprise class performance to Linux. The contributors discuss how to easily setup, deploy and configure these performance features and discuss the performance gains using an OLTP workload on a 128 GB 8-core (16-threads) IBM System p5 570 server. Relative performance results are given for each improvement as well as discussions on 4-core and 8-core scaling results.

Physical-Layer Considerations for the Realistic Deployment of Impairment-Aware Connection Provisioning | 2007-06-15 | Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers |
| Nowadays, impairment-aware connection provisioning is a hot topic due to the evolution of optical networks to all-optical infrastructures and to the need to maintain or enhance Quality of Service (QoS). Most of the research efforts in this field use complex, analytical models of impairments as the basis for the connection provisioning decision. However, these models are not fully feasible in practice due to cost, monitoring limitations and the architectures of impairment-aware Routing and Wavelength Assignment (RWA). This paper discusses key physical-layer considerations for the realistic deployment of impairment-aware connection provisioning, and provides an example of cost-effective, distributed Impairment-aware RWA (IRWA) in the context of the all-optical ADRENALINE testbed.

Radio-Over-Fiber Transmission of 1.25-Gigabit Ethernet Signal on 60-GHz Band Subcarrier With Performance Improvement and Wavelength Reuse | 2007-06-01 | Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers |
| With Radio-over-Fiber (RoF) enabled remote antenna, Gigabit Ethernet service operating at 60-GHz frequencies can be accessed cordlessly. Due to limited linear operation region of 60-GHz optoelectronic modulators commercially available so far, optical weak modulation is required leading to limited link performance. This paper demonstrates in RoF transmission of 1.25-Gigabit Ethernet signal on 60-GHz band subcarrier, the fiber downlink performance is improved by suppressing the optical carrier-to-sideband ratio based on the usage of a simple and low-cost fabricated 2ÃÂ2 all-fiber optical interleaver. Simultaneously by using the interleaver, the downlink optical carrier is recovered and is reused as optical source for fiber uplink hence laser-free access point is achieved.
