Linux Networking Scalability on High-Performance Scalable Servers | 2007-04-01 | IBM |
| Much has already been written about networking performance, optimization, and tuning on a variety of hardware, platforms, and operating systems under various workloads. The proliferation of high-performance scalable servers (such as the IBM eServer xSeries x460 and the IBM System x 3950) has added a new level of complexity to networking and system performance. For instance, scalable servers whose capacity can be increased by adding full chassis (or nodes) add networking scalability across multi-node systems as a significant ingredient in overall system performance. This paper examines and demonstrates Linux networking scalability on a multi-node, high-performance system as it utilizes system board gigabit Ethernet adapters from 1 to 4 nodes.

Jump-Start Business Activity Monitoring (BAM), Part 3: Install and Configure IBM WebSphere Business Monitor V6.0.2 in a Network Deployment Environment - Advanced Installation and Network Deployment Configuration | 2007-03-20 | IBM |
| In this paper, one installs and configures an advanced IBM WebSphere Business Monitor V6.0.2 deployment in a network deployment environment. This deployment is used for production since it allows for scalability and high availability. Walk through the steps for pre-installation, Launchpad, installation verification, model installation, and model configuration. One also learns to run a model and send events through WebSphere Business Monitor server and to verify data in the dashboards.

Towards a Multi-Perspective Assessment of Scalability of Distributed IT Services | 2007-03-15 | Vrije Universiteit |
| Scalability is an important issue in distributed IT service design and should be addressed at least from technical and economic perspectives. The paper presents a conceptual framework that addresses scalability from these two perspectives. To explore scalability of distributed services, the framework employs a value model and UML deployment model to describe scalability concerns of a distributed, commercial IT service.

Automatic Application-Specific Customization of Multi-Processor Microarchitecture | 2007-03-08 | Washington University in St. Louis |
| Reconfigurable logic devices offer new and interesting opportunities for application-specific customization and processor configuration. However, the most compelling optimization problems in this area are NP-hard. This paper customized the microarchitecture of a single processor core for a target application by viewing it as a multi-objective constrained integer nonlinear optimization problem. The results demonstrated the validity, feasibility, and scalability of that approach. Here, they propose extensions to customize the microarchitecture of multiple processor cores.

Nortel Network Case Study: TeleCable | 2007-03-07 | Nortel Networks |
| TeleCable wanted to empower a leading regional service provider to deliver flexible, resilient, high-bandwidth connectivity to an important regional savings bank. Nortel's Metro Ethernet Networking portfolio, comprising the Metro Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 and the Metro Ethernet Services Units 1800 and 1850. Provider Backbone Bridges (IEEE 802.1ah) deliver massive scalability, whilst carrier-class OAM (Operations, Administration and Maintenance) provides a range of service and network monitoring tools. Finally, the Optical Metro 5200 links the core nodes with a high-speed optical backbone.

Modeling Scalable TCP Friendliness to NewReno TCP | 2007-03-01 | Budapest University of Technology and Economics |
| Scalable TCP is a simple change to the traditional TCP congestion control algorithm which dramatically improves TCP performance in high speed wide area networks. The focus of this contribution is to model the performance of Scalable TCP algorithm sharing bottleneck link with a NewReno TCP. The analysis is performed during congestion avoidance phase, for both TCP flows, in steady state and near to the steady state. This model follows the existing model of NewReno TCP and is further expanded to predict the performance of congestion avoidance phase of the two TCP variants competing on a bottleneck link. The model is used in situations where congestion occurs due to buffer overflow (synchronous loss) and random loss (asynchronous loss).

A New Direction: Service Delivery To Your Desktop | 2007-03-01 | Microsoft |
| The American University in Cairo (AUC) in Egypt is one of the largest and oldest educational institutions in the Middle East, with five campuses distributed throughout Cairo. A technology platform had been built over a number of years to accommodate a surge in demand for computing facilities, with rapid expansion in most departments and units. However, as a result of the rapid expansion and parallel initiatives from many units, the resulting technology platform comprised an incompatible mix of systems and applications that was difficult to manage, administer and support. In 2005, Academic Computing Services (ACS) designed and implemented a new, standardized environment using Microsoft technology. This solution is easier to manage, cost-effective and efficient, with IT team members no longer facing time-consuming commutes between campuses.
