Self-Virtualized I/O: High Performance, Scalable I/O Virtualization in Multi-Core Systems | 2007-10-22 | IBM |
| Virtualizing I/O subsystems and peripheral devices is an integral part of system virtualization. This paper advocates the notion of self-virtualized I/O (SV-IO). Specifically, it proposes a hypervisor-level abstraction that permits guest virtual machines to efficiently exploit the multi-core nature of future machines when interacting with virtualized I/O. The concrete instance of SV-IO developed and evaluated herein provides virtual interfaces to an underlying physical device, the network interface, and manages the way in which the device's physical resources are used by guest operating systems.

Optimizing Performance When Designing Highly Scalable SAN Solutions: Guidelines for SAN Architects | 2007-10-22 | QLogic |
| Before the advent of stackable switch solutions, Storage Area Network (SAN) architects had to trade scalability vs. performance. Data traffic across the network was limited to relatively few Inter-Switch Links (ISL). QLogic stackable switch solutions solve the scalability/performance dilemma. Each model in the SANbox 5000 series features a 4 pack of high-speed (10Gb) stacking ports that enable a SAN architect to scale seamlessly and maintain high performance. Connecting switches together using the dedicated stacking trunks preserves all 4Gb ports for use by servers and storage devices.

Sinfonia: A New Paradigm for Building Scalable Distributed Systems | 2007-10-17 | Association for Computing Machinery |
| This paper proposes a new paradigm for building scalable distributed systems. One's approach does not require dealing with message-passing protocols - a major complication in existing distributed systems. Instead, developers just design and manipulate data structures within the service called Sinfonia. Sinfonia keeps data for applications on a set of memory nodes, each exporting a linear address space. At the core of Sinfonia is a novel minitransaction primitive that enables efficient and consistent access to data, while hiding the complexities that arise from concurrency and failures. Using Sinfonia, the paper implemented two very different and complex applications in a few months: a cluster file system and a group communication service.

Towards Scalable Information Spaces | 2007-10-08 | University of Innsbruck |
| Recent work in the field of middleware technology proposes semantic spaces as a tool for coping with the scalability, heterogeneity and dynamism issues of large scale distributed IT environments. This paper discusses the impact that functional and non-functional requirements have on the scalability of a semantic space installation. Based on this analysis the paper elaborates on the application scenarios in which semantic information spaces are expected to be a feasible middleware solution for Web scale communication and coordination.

A Flawless Upgrade to SAP Solutions Was the Prescription the Country's Largest Drug Distributor Needed to Handle Its Phenomenal Growth | 0000-00-00 | SAP |
| McKesson Pharmaceutical, a division of McKesson Corp., a leading healthcare services company, upgraded legacy systems to provide more flexibility and a stable IT environment, primarily for sales and distribution, materials management, and business intelligence applications. The company wanted to support rapid growth with adequate business software and develop robust, flexible business applications. The challenge was to provide a stable environment for supporting complex functions and provide a scalable platform. The company deployed components of SAP R/3 including functionality for sales and distribution and materials management, as well as business intelligence functionality. This functionality is now available in the mySAP ERP solution.

Microsoft Case Study: ONStor | 0000-00-00 | Microsoft |
| ONStor is a provider of scalable clustered NAS solutions that deliver cost effective open network file storage for the enterprise. ONStor implemented a Windows compatible file server using open, publicly available information on the CIFS Server Message Block (SMB) protocol. To ensure full Windows protocol compliance now and in the future, ONStor took advantage of Microsoft's Communication Protocol Program and licensed the "Generic File Server" suite of protocols. With the help of MCPP, ONStor delivered a CIFS file server rich in functionality including support for Kerberos Authentication, Active Directory services, and SMB-II extensions.

Binomial Graph: A Scalable and Fault-Tolerant Logical Network Topology | 2007-09-09 | University of Tennessee |
| The number of processors embedded in high performance computing platforms is growing daily to solve larger and more complex problems. The logical network topologies must also support the high degree of scalability in dynamic environments. This paper presents a scalable and fault tolerant topology called BinoMial Graph (BMG). BMG provides desirable topological properties in terms of both scalability and fault-tolerance for high performance computing such as reasonable degree, regular graph, low diameter, symmetric graph, low cost factor, low message traffic density, optimal connectivity, low fault-diameter and strongly resilient. Several fault-tolerant routing algorithms are provided on BMG for various message types. More importantly, BMG is able to deliver broadcast messages from any node within log2(n) steps.

Automart.com Serves 1.3 Million Records to 2 Million Monthly Customers With Oracle and Zend | 0000-00-00 | Oracle |
| Automart.com part of Cox Auto Trader, a subsidiary of Cox Enterprises, Inc., is the Internet's largest automotive website featuring used car listings exclusively from dealers. The company wanted more than 1.3 million classified records in the database and daily turnover of 20 percent. The challenges were to hundreds of datafeeds daily - constant changes; live, real-time database to avoid locking problems; OLTP website to handle many concurrent transactions; and need database that works smoothly with PHP. After evaluating Microsoft SQL Server, Trader chose the high-performance runtime environment of Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition and Zend Platform. Oracle Database 10g provides industry-leading scalability, reliability, and security.

Aspen Aerogels, Inc. Manages Growth With Adaptive, Scalable Enterprise Applications | 0000-00-00 | Oracle |
| Formed in 2001, privately held Aspen Aerogels is the acknowledged leader in aerogel technology. The company wanted to replace legacy systems and Excel spreadsheets with scalable, standardized applications that will accommodate the company's continued growth and improve decision-making processes and productivity by implementing integrated applications that provide visibility across the organization. The challenge was to enable precision tracking of sales pipeline activity to help determine the necessary production speed and create a global supply chain network. The company implemented Oracle E-Business Suite applications for process manufacturing, purchasing, and financials to manage data in one system, react more quickly to sales and production needs, and scale for future growth.

MANAGEM Introduces New Business Efficiencies Using Integrated Technology | 0000-00-00 | Oracle |
| The mining and hydrometallurgical group MANAGEM produces and sells cobalt, base metals, and metal derivatives. The company wanted to reduce heavy system integration overhead related to cost and labor and introduce scalability; legacy technology was built on closed standards. The challenge was to improve reporting by establishing a single source of information across the group and introduce shared data sources and real time accuracy. The company introduced Oracle E-Business Suite applications, including Oracle Financials, to increase efficiency across the accounting business, automate business processes, and integrate data and improved decision-making and accuracy across MANAGEM through collaborative best practices using Oracle Purchasing.
