Asigra Case Study: DFA Law | 2007-07-31 | Asigra |
| Asigra's Televaulting software is provided to DFA Law by Smartways through its TouchPoint service. The combination of agentless software and disk-based backup across a WAN attacks both the "Hard" and "Soft" costs associated with conventional tape backup, including software license fees, media and drive maintenance, offsite storage, and the staffing required to perform tape-based backup.

A Short guide to a faster WAN | 2007-07-20 | Quocirca Ltd |
| Wide areas networks (WANs) are essential to the majority of businesses, connecting remote locations and individuals back to centralised IT resources. But as the network is expected to handle more bandwidth intensive applications such as voice and video it is essential to ensure the WAN usage is well managed - eliminating unwanted traffic and accelerating business content

Optimizing the ASC WAN: Evaluating Network Performance Tools for Comparing Transport Protocols | 2007-07-01 | Sandia National Laboratories |
| The Advanced Simulation & Computing Wide Area Network (ASC WAN), which is a high delay-bandwidth network connection between US Department of Energy National Laboratories, is constantly being examined and evaluated for efficiency. One of the current transport-layer protocols which is used, TCP, was developed for traffic demands which are different from that on the ASC WAN. The Stream Control Transport Protocol (SCTP), on the other hand, has shown characteristics which make it more appealing to networks such as these. Most important, before considering a replacement for TCP on any network, a testing tool that performs well against certain criteria needs to be found.

Enterprise Branch Wide Area Application Services Design Guide (Version 1.1) | 2007-06-22 | Cisco Systems |
| WAAS is one of the key Cisco application networking service components for the improvement of application and WAN optimization solutions. However, as branch offices increase in the size and complexity of their deployment, so do the interdependencies of their infrastructure services. The approach to WAN and application optimization begins with a comprehensive understanding of the behavior of branch applications. A branch infrastructure needs to be designed as a whole to capitalize on network resource features. By doing so, one add a measure of intelligent application inspection and routing for response time and link utilization, which are the two common bottleneck resources at the branch. | |||

QLogic Enables WAN File Sharing | 2007-06-04 | QLogic |
| The office environment has become increasingly distributed over the last decade. The costs of maintaining facilities and employees in dense urban or even suburban locations have forced companies to create and/or better utilize remote offices and regional facilities. This requires that data be transferred and shared across the WAN. Several point-products, collectively dubbed WAFS (Wide-Area File Systems), have been introduced that attempt to solve this problem. While most WAFS systems can achieve measurable performance gains across the WAN, they still leave many issues regarding deployment, reliability, manageability, and cost unanswered. A fairly simple, proven, and cost-effective alternative can be realized with the installation of intelligent storage routers.

Boost Revenue and Customer Satisfaction With Managed Application-Acceleration Service | 2007-06-01 | Cisco Systems |
| A burgeoning global trend toward branch-infrastructure consolidation is creating a significant new managed-service opportunity. Enterprises that centralize their application, file, and print services need assurance that their branch-office employees can access services over the WAN as quickly as they could over the LAN. Service providers can meet this need by offering a managed application-acceleration service in conjunction with their existing Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) VPN service. This paper explains why business customers subscribe to a managed application-acceleration service, how the service works, and benefits for providers as well as their customers.

Maximize WAN Optimization Security and Compliance | 2007-06-01 | Cisco Systems |
| Although WAN optimization solutions accelerates data backup and maintain regulatory compliance over the WAN, most of these solutions pay little attention to protection of data locally stored in branch offices or data in transit over the WAN. This lack introduces security risks because organizations now need to manage two sets of data streams with unequal protection: new, accelerated data flows with little or no protection, and regular flows that are well protected with encryption, stateful firewall protection, and Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS). Security administrators struggle to secure data consistently across multiple branch offices worldwide, whether it is data accessed through the LAN or accelerated data sent across the WAN.

Exploiting Diversity to Enhance Multimedia Streaming Over Cellular Links | 0000-00-00 | Microsoft |
| Wireless Wide Area Networks (WWANs) are becoming ubiquitous across most geographic regions, enabling simultaneous coverage from multiple providers. WWAN channels exhibit both uncorrelated and correlated behaviour on a variety of levels. This paper examines the statistical properties of WWAN links, and illustrates the benefits in heterogeneity that can be exploited to improve statistical throughput and Multimedia quality. The results are based on real network measurements. This paper describes the design and implementation of a high quality multimedia streaming application that implements WWAN streaming optimisations utilising Unequal Error Protection coding techniques and it evaluate the performance over an operational WWAN network.
