whitepaper TCP Sending Rate Control at Tera Bits Per Second2007-05-31 University of Cambridge
An analysis of the sending rate of TCP control over Terabit per second rate links illustrates how future optical network characteristics, such as higher bitrates, network congestion, and larger data loads, would affect performance. This paper has implemented a model to allow increased sending rate for TCP. It is shown that even if the network bitrate is higher and the sending rate of TCP is scaled up, the throughput does not grow considerably, and latency remains one of the key parameters which must be reduced to improve performance.
whitepaper IP Network Helps Virgin Megastores Enhance the Retail Experience2007-05-23 AT&T Knowledge Ventures
Like other music and entertainment retailers, Virgin Megastores is endeavoring to cope with the decline in music sales across the industry; customers are not purchasing as many CDs and DVDs as previously. As a result the Megastores are challenged to operate as efficiently as possible and to develop new strategies for luring customers in and inducing them to buy. Virgin Entertainment Group needed to create an engaging environment that immerses customers and drives purchases. Virgin Megastores relies on an MPLS-based IP Virtual Private Network (VPN). AT&T Global Business Solutions, AT&T's consulting organization, designed the IP-based network and conducted site surveys of all store locations to determine their requirements.

whitepaper HP Helps Broadband Provider MVB Offer "Triple Play" Services Over High-Speed Network2007-05-22 Cisco Systems
HP focuses on simplifying technology experiences for all of its customers - from individual consumers to the largest businesses. HP along with Cisco and MidtVest Bredbaand (MVB), a Denmark-based broadband provider introduced, to build a high-speed, fiber-to-the-home network for the delivery of advanced services such as video on demand and interactive TV to homes and businesses. Using the new network, MVB's Content Denmark subsidiary will deliver to more than 200,000 customers the so-called "Triple play" of Internet protocol (IP)-based services: Internet, digital TV and voice.

whitepaper IPv6 Business Applications2007-05-14 Cisco Systems
IPv6 technology can provide many advantages for public agencies, including improved routing capabilities and enhanced mobility features for wireless use. IPv6 can give civilian agencies the capability to significantly improve their operations and services. The protocol can also enable the military to carry out its vision of network-centric warfare. In peacetime, IPv6 can also help government agencies to reduce expenses, speed response time in disasters, promote safer and more environmentally sound living, and aid in humanitarian efforts.

whitepaper Dynamic TCP Acknowledgment With Sliding Window2007-05-11 University of Electro-Communications
The dynamic TCP acknowledgement problem formulated by Dooly et al. has been intensively studied in the area of competitive analysis. However, their framework does not consider the sliding window that restricts the maximum number of packets that the sender can inject into the network without an acknowledgement in TCP protocol. This paper proposes a new problem in which the sliding window is realistically integrated. This paper studies how the ability of on-line algorithms changes, depending on whether the receiver knows the window size. It shows that a deterministic on-line algorithm extended from the optimal on-line algorithm for Dooly's framework achieves the best competitive ratio of 2, if the window size is given.
whitepaper SMS-Based Package Tracking System2007-05-10 Derdack
Acette was asked to provide a leading international courier company with a SMS messaging infrastructure that allows their customers to track shipments. The challenges faced mainly related to the requested time frame of 6 weeks only. By integrating Derdack's message master SMS SDK, Acette could concentrate on the back-end system of the international courier company rather than having to think about the SMS messaging side. Acette built a solution that allows customers to initiate the tracking of their shipments. Acette also provided a XML interface for an external application to communicate with their developed product (SmartMessenger) over a TCP/IP socket and provide the functionality of some of the message master APIs.

whitepaper First Mile Wireless - Extending the Office Experience to the Wellhead2007-05-01 Cisco Systems
The oil and gas industry has been working toward the digital oil field of the future, with the goal of being able to monitor and manage in real time all operational activities along the entire oil value chain. With a standard IP networking solution, companies can now begin to implement this vision by focusing on the "First mile," which is where the oil wells and other assets of the Exploration and Production (E&P) companies are. These assets - land-based fields and pumps, offshore drilling rigs, production platforms, and mobile field management operations - are located in remote areas with harsh environments. By implementing the Cisco First Mile Wireless solution, the oil and gas industry takes an important step toward a complete digital oilfield.

whitepaper Creating Competitive Advantage Through Converged Communications2007-05-01 IDG (International Data Group)
The availability of a global telecommunications infrastructure has allowed enterprises to become more distributed and to operate key business functions such as finance, manufacturing and customer contact centres across the world. In a quest for increased profitability and efficiency, the outsourcing and offshoring of non-core competencies to geographic areas with high-skilled and low-cost labour availability have become increasingly popular. CEOs of large enterprises that are looking to increase market share and attract new customers in this increasingly globalising world need to realise that there is a real threat that inefficient and ineffective communications and collaboration throughout the entire business process will hamper the achievability of shared business goals.

whitepaper Multi-Layer Analysis to Quantify the Impact of Optical Burst Reordering on TCP Performance2007-04-30 University of Stuttgart
This paper provides a new methodology to quantify the impact of optical burst reordering in OBS networks on the TCP/IP end-to-end performance. The paper assumes a multi-layer network stack consisting on TCP/IP on top of OBS. It proposes a multi-layer analysis of burst and packet reordering that is realized by simulation. The paper applies the packet reordering definition of the IETF IPPM working group and use two different reorder metrics for precise characterization of reordering. It identifies the key parameters in a burst and packet reordering scenario and point out TCP critical scenarios.
whitepaper Two Different Models of FAST TCP and Their Stable and Efficient Modification2007-04-29 Springer Science+Business Media
This paper introduces two different models of FAST TCP. One is from the original FAST TCP model, and the other is from the ns-2 implementation of FAST TCP. Interestingly, these two models show significantly different dynamic performance and stability characteristics. That is, while the latter model is always globally exponentially stable, the former model is faster than the latter model and possible to go unstable. Motivated from these two models, the paper suggests a modified congestion control algorithm. By tuning the gain of the terms caused by the different of the two models, the modified algorithm can be made to become globally asymptotically stable and more responsive than the ns-2 implementation model of FAST TCP.
