Installing and Using GNU Screen | 2006-11-01 01:00:29 | Sun Microsystems |
| Much of today's system administration is done remotely by means of either a console server or a direct ssh connection to the machines themselves. Since these connections run over TCP, an unreliable IP network can cut the sysadmin's connection to a host during the middle of a critical task. Once that interactive session is disconnected, there's no way to return to the running processes, even if the shell continues to run on the remote machine. Screen, GNU's terminal-based windowing system, allows the sysadmin to reconnect to a running shell on a remote system so that poor network connectivity won't result in the loss of the session. | |||

Bridgewater Systems and Allot Communications Help Top-Tier Service Provider Take Control of Peer-to-Peer Challenge | 2006-10-13 01:00:15 | Bridgewater Systems |
| The client offers tiered high-speed internet services and strives to guarantee a minimum level of bandwidth for its users. But with the network drain caused by Peer-to-Peer (P2P) and the impact that was having on non-P2P users, the Service Provider was left with two choices for restoring its service levels and reducing operating expenses incurred from the extra stress on bandwidth. One option was to invest capital and operating expenses in building and maintaining more bandwidth in its network - a temporary fix that would simply give P2P users more bandwidth to monopolize. The other option was to look for a way to more efficiently control and manage P2P and other bandwidth-intensive applications on its network. The company chose the latter, and turned to Bridgewater Systems for a solution. |
