World's 2nd Largest HMO Moves 2-Terabyte BI Data Warehouse to SQL Server 2008 | 2008-07-01 | Microsoft |
| Clalit Health Services serves more than 3.8 million people, and supports 70 million customer interactions per year. Clalit uses the Microsoft Application Platform to support some 16 terabytes of data, including a 2.7-terabyte Business Intelligence (BI) solution that serves as a repository for clinical and operational information. Clalit's Enterprise BI Data Warehouse has become so important to healthcare professionals and clinic managers that the company decided on an early upgrade to Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Enterprise to take advantage of new features including data compression; enhanced star join functionality to improve query performance; the Resource Governor, to help protect query performance; and support for spatial data types to help Clalit incorporate geographic and related data in planning service delivery.

Superior AVC HD Encoder Architecture: Single-Slice AVC Encoder Sets an Unprecedented Benchmark in HD Video Quality at Relatively Low Bit Rates | 2006-09-06 | Cisco Systems |
| As service providers in the broadcast industry face unprecedented competition for viewers, new encoding technology can be deployed to deliver more content over existing bandwidth to deliver the new, advanced services consumers are demanding. A technologically superior implementation by Scientific Atlanta of the MPEG-4/H.264 Advanced Video Compression (AVC) encoding standard will enable service providers to take advantage of bandwidth savings while delivering the high-quality video experience that High-Definition TeleVision (HDTV) demands through the implementation of single-slice AVC encoding. | |||

Bulky Data Is No Problem Thanks to Compression/Decompression in .NET 2.0 | 2006-06-20 | JupiterMedia |
| Compression is useful for reducing the size of data. Compression is extremely useful in cases where one needs to transmit data over networks, especially slow and costly networks, such as GPRS connections. One of the new namespaces in version 2.0 of the .NET Framework is System.IO.Compression. This new namespace contains two classes for data compression: DeflateStream and GZipStream. Both compression classes support lossless compression and decompression and are designed for dealing with streams.

On the Determination of Optimal Parameterized Prefix Codes for Adaptive Entropy Coding | 2006-04-28 | Hewlett-Packard (HP) |
| While complex data sources, like images and audio, require sophisticated coding contexts and source modeling, commonly the high cost of estimating conditional probabilities and computing optimal codes can be avoided by storing sets of codewords, and selecting the best code based on source estimates. Golomb-Rice codes are commonly used because they are parameterized with a single integer, are easy to implement, and are optimal for sources with geometric distribution. The work discussed in this paper considers the fact that the Golomb-Rice codes are truly optimal only when the source's single parameter is known with certainty, which in practice is never the case. This paper investigates how these codes perform, depending on how the source is estimated from previous samples.

A Novel Visual Perceptual Model With an Application to Hi-Fidelity Image Annotation | 2006-04-08 | Microsoft |
| This paper introduces a novel visual perception model that aims to quantify the localized tolerance to noise for arbitrary imagery. The model is built by mixing the outputs from an entropy and a differential localized standard deviation filter. The mixture is then low-pass filtered and normalized to provide a model that produces substantially better perceptual hi-fidelity than existing tools of similar complexity. Although there exist numerous applications for the new model, from compression to medical imaging and denoising, the authors demonstrate its efficacy using an image annotation application. The objective is to embed 32 bits of meta-data into a single image in a way that is robust to aggressive JPEG compression and cropping.

Reading Compressed Text Files Using SAS Software | 2006-02-28 | SAS Institute |
| External raw data files continuously needed at work are every day more and greater. Normally, those files come in any of the more popular compressed formats like zip, 7zip, gzip and rar. A common practice is to previously decompress files and next, read them with SAS. Taking advantage of the PIPE device of the FILENAME statement and the aid of some tools free to use, one can directly read compressed data without extracting them first. This paper shows different ways to read compressed data, considering several formats and software tools used to produce archives. Open code software will be used to access compressed data as well as a special dynamic library of the SAS Software.

Distributed Data Aggregation in Sensor Networks by Regression Based Compression | 2005-08-27 | University of Cincinnati |
| This paper proposes a method for data compression and its subsequent regeneration using a polynomial regression technique. The approximate data received over the considered area by fitting it to a function and communicate this by passing only the coefficients that describe the function. This paper extends the previous algorithm TREG to consider non-complete aggregation trees. The proposed algorithm DUMMYREG is run at each parent node and uses information present in the existing child to construct a complete binary tree. In addition to obtaining values in regions devoid of sensor nodes and reducing communication overhead, this new approach further reduces the error when the readings are regenerated at the sink.

Communication Strategies and Coding for Relaying | 2006-12-13 01:00:24 | Alcatel-Lucent |
| Information-theoretic models for relaying are developed and applied to wireline and wireless networks. For wireline networks with node constraints, data compression is shown to improve rates. For wireless networks with half-duplex constraints, decode-and-forward strategies are developed that can give substantial rate gains over no-relay transmission and traditional multihopping. The performance of the strategies is verified by designing coded modulations that approach certain information-theoretic limits. The codes used are irregular Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes. | |||
