Designing High Availability for SQL Server 2005 | 2009-11-17 | CA XOsoft |
| The end of downtime, period! Job No. 1 for database administrators (DBAs) is making sure that the data they're responsible for is available all the time. That's because for anyone who implements database systems with Microsoft SQL Server, be it 2000 or 2005, data availability quickly becomes mission-critical. This is why DBAs must ensure that they have some form of protection in place for these systems, be it a rapid-recovery or a high-availability system. They know that, should any outage occur, they will be held responsible and faced with the repair of the system. What if you could completely avoid downtime? What if you could go home knowing that the system would always be up.Well, if you're a DBA and you want database peace of mind, read on.

Bluetooth-Enabled In-Home Patient Monitoring System: Early Detection of Alzheimer's Disease | 2009-10-02 | University of Waterloo |
| As the baby boom generation is aging, more and more people are diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, early detection of which is shown to be vital and necessary for better medical treatments and prolonging life expectancies. This paper proposes a Bluetooth-enabled in-home patient monitoring system, facilitating early detection of Alzheimer's disease. The paper takes advantage of short-range Bluetooth communications for in-home patient location tracking, and the location information can then be recorded in a local database. With the knowledge of the movement pattern of a patient, a medical practitioner is more likely to be able to determine whether a target patient is developing Alzheimer's disease.

Dell Update Deployment Using Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager | 2009-09-22 | Dell |
| IT organizations often struggle to efficiently manage a large number of systems while still maintaining a secure environmentÂand deploying hardware, firmware, and software updates in these environments can be fraught with challenges. Efficiently managing system updates requires using a management solution that can scale and automate update deployment in a reliable way. To help meet this need, Dell and Microsoft have collaborated to simplify and accelerate hardware configuration and deployment through an integrated solution that combines Microsoft® System Center Configuration Manager 2007 and DellTM Hardware Update Catalogs.

Distance-Based Distributed Multihop Localization in Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks | 2009-09-22 | Freie Universitat Berlin |
| Localization in wireless sensor networks has been a big challenge for researchers in the past years. Besides physical problems like estimating the distance between two nodes, applicable algorithms are still on the list of open research issues. While single-hop localization with direct connection to fixed anchors is well researched, the localization with fixed anchors over a multihop route is still at its beginning. Especially the combination of multi-hop networks and mobile nodes needs further research. This paper presents and discusses a refined algorithm and a simulation-based approach regarding the mentioned scenario. Using a five phase structure that pursues a greedy approach, including a refining anchor selection, the paper investigates and discusses the precision of localization in a mobile environment.

On the Feasibility of Determining Angular Separation in Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks | 2009-09-18 | Springer Science+Business Media |
| Mobile sensors require periodic position measurements for navigation around the sensing region. Such information is often obtained using GPS or onboard sensors such as optical encoders. However, GPS is not reliable in all environments, and odometry accrues error over time. Although several localization techniques exist for wireless sensor networks, they are typically time consuming, resource intensive, and/or require expensive hardware, all of which are undesirable for lightweight mobile nodes. The paper proposes a technique for obtaining angle-of-arrival information that uses the wheel encoder data from the mobile sensor, and the RF Doppler-shift observed by stationary nodes. These sensor data are used to determine the angular separation between stationary beacons, which can be used for navigation.

DMRC: Distortion-Minimizing Rate Control for Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks | 2009-09-11 | Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers |
| The availability of inexpensive CMOS cameras and microphones that can ubiquitously capture multimedia content from the environment is fostering the development of Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs), i.e., distributed systems of wirelessly networked devices that can retrieve video and audio streams, still images, and scalar sensor data. WMSNs require the sensor network paradigm to be re-thought in view of the need for mechanisms to deliver multimedia content with a pre-defined level of Quality of Service (QoS). A new rate control scheme for WMSNs is introduced in this paper with a two-fold objective: maximize the video quality of each individual video stream; maintain fairness in video quality between different video streams.

Using Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks in a Telemonitoring System for Healthcare | 2009-09-10 | University of Salamanca |
| Ambient Intelligence has acquired great importance in recent years and requires the development of new innovative solutions. This paper presents a distributed telemonitoring system aimed at improving healthcare and assistance to dependent people at their homes. The system implements a SOA-based platform which allows heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks to communicate in a distributed way independently of time and location restrictions. This approach provides the system with a higher ability to recover from errors and a better flexibility to change their behavior at execution time. Preliminary results are presented in this paper.
