Distance-Based Distributed Multihop Localization in Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks | 2009-09-22 | Freie Universitat Berlin |
| Localization in wireless sensor networks has been a big challenge for researchers in the past years. Besides physical problems like estimating the distance between two nodes, applicable algorithms are still on the list of open research issues. While single-hop localization with direct connection to fixed anchors is well researched, the localization with fixed anchors over a multihop route is still at its beginning. Especially the combination of multi-hop networks and mobile nodes needs further research. This paper presents and discusses a refined algorithm and a simulation-based approach regarding the mentioned scenario. Using a five phase structure that pursues a greedy approach, including a refining anchor selection, the paper investigates and discusses the precision of localization in a mobile environment.

On the Feasibility of Determining Angular Separation in Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks | 2009-09-18 | Springer Science+Business Media |
| Mobile sensors require periodic position measurements for navigation around the sensing region. Such information is often obtained using GPS or onboard sensors such as optical encoders. However, GPS is not reliable in all environments, and odometry accrues error over time. Although several localization techniques exist for wireless sensor networks, they are typically time consuming, resource intensive, and/or require expensive hardware, all of which are undesirable for lightweight mobile nodes. The paper proposes a technique for obtaining angle-of-arrival information that uses the wheel encoder data from the mobile sensor, and the RF Doppler-shift observed by stationary nodes. These sensor data are used to determine the angular separation between stationary beacons, which can be used for navigation.

DMRC: Distortion-Minimizing Rate Control for Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks | 2009-09-11 | Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers |
| The availability of inexpensive CMOS cameras and microphones that can ubiquitously capture multimedia content from the environment is fostering the development of Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs), i.e., distributed systems of wirelessly networked devices that can retrieve video and audio streams, still images, and scalar sensor data. WMSNs require the sensor network paradigm to be re-thought in view of the need for mechanisms to deliver multimedia content with a pre-defined level of Quality of Service (QoS). A new rate control scheme for WMSNs is introduced in this paper with a two-fold objective: maximize the video quality of each individual video stream; maintain fairness in video quality between different video streams.

Using Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks in a Telemonitoring System for Healthcare | 2009-09-10 | University of Salamanca |
| Ambient Intelligence has acquired great importance in recent years and requires the development of new innovative solutions. This paper presents a distributed telemonitoring system aimed at improving healthcare and assistance to dependent people at their homes. The system implements a SOA-based platform which allows heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks to communicate in a distributed way independently of time and location restrictions. This approach provides the system with a higher ability to recover from errors and a better flexibility to change their behavior at execution time. Preliminary results are presented in this paper.

The Essentials Series: Solving Network Problems Before They Occur | 2009-09-09 | Realtimepublishers.com |
| The goal of this paper has been to illustrate why effective monitoring and management is necessary for a health network. That need is the case irrespective of the size of network. Whether one is a small business with a few devices or a large enterprise with many thousands, not having this vision prevents one from actually understanding what's going on inside network.

Colorcon Ensures IT Performance Across Global Operations With Enterprise Monitoring Solution | 2009-09-01 | Oracle |
| Colorcon wanted to provide a comprehensive management tool to facilitate effective and efficient monitoring of the company's rapidly growing IT environment and automate monitoring processes and gain an enterprisewide view of IT performance across operations that span 28 global locations. The challenge was to ensure round-the-clock availability of the company's database, middleware, and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) applications that support its worldwide operations and enable greater visibility into IT issues to accelerate identification of root causes and problem resolution. Colorcon implemented Oracle Enterprise Manager to provide Colorcon with end-to-end visibility into global IT performance levels, replacing a number of disparate, spreadsheet-based tools and increased automated monitoring capabilities - reducing system downtime, maintenance costs and improving productivity.

Seafood Company Raises IT Performance and Security With Unified Management | 2009-09-01 | Microsoft |
| Taylor Shellfish Farms, a family-owned seafood business for more than 100 years, has 400 employees and worldwide revenues of U.S.$50 million. Because the Washington-based company employs just one person to manage its entire North America IT infrastructure, it sought to convert its IT operation from a largely manual one to a centralized, more automated system. As an early adopter of Microsoft System Center Essentials 2010 technology, Taylor Shellfish Farms is now proactively monitoring its IT environment and troubleshooting issues from a central location. Software updates and deployments are accelerated through automation, enhancing security, system performance, and employee productivity.

Wireless Sensor Networks and the Internet of Things: Selected Challenges | 2009-08-17 | Technische Universitat Darmstadt |
| Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are increasingly gaining impact in one's day to day lives. They are finding a wide range of applications in various domains, including health-care, assisted and enhanced-living scenarios, industrial and production monitoring, control networks, and many other fields. In future, WSNs are expected to be integrated into the "Internet of Things", where sensor nodes join the Internet dynamically, and use it to collaborate and accomplish their tasks. However, when WSNs become a part of the Internet, one must carefully investigate and analyze the issues involved with this integration. This paper evaluates different approaches to integrate WSNs into the Internet and outline a set of challenges, which one targets to address in the near future.

Architectural Considerations for Distributed RFID Tracking and Monitoring | 2009-08-12 | Association for Computing Machinery |
| This paper discusses architectural challenges in designing a distributed, scalable system for RFID tracking and monitoring. The paper argues for the need to combine inference and query processing techniques into a single system and consider several architectural choices for building such a system. Key research challenges in designing the system include: the design of inference techniques that span multiple sites, distributed maintenance of inference and query state, sharing of inference and query state for scalability, and the use of writeable RFID tags to transfer state information as objects move through the supply chain. The paper also presents the status of the ongoing research and preliminary results from an early implementation.
