Performance of TCP Over ABR With Long-Range Dependent VBR Background Traffic Over Terrestrial and Satellite ATM Networks | 2007-03-07 | Ohio State University |
| Compressed video is well known to be self-similar in nature. VBR carrying long-range dependent, multiplexed MPEG-2 video sources traffic is modeled. The actual traffic for the model is generated using fast-fourier transform of the fractional gaussian noise sequence. Our model of compressed video sources bears similarity to an MPEG-2 transport stream carrying video, i.e., it is long-range dependent and generates traffic in a piecewise constant bit rate manner. This paper studies the effect of such VBR traffic on ABR carrying TCP traffic. The effect of such VBR traffic is that the ABR capacity is highly variant. It was found that a switch algorithm like ERICA+ can tolerate this variance in ABR capacity while maintaining high throughput and low delay.

Ensuring Efficient Service in the Milan Underground | 2007-03-01 | siemens |
| Azienda Trasporti Milanesi SpA (ATM), with nearly one hundred years of experience, manages public transportation in the city of Milan and 85 neighboring localities. Azienda Trasporti Milanesi SpA wanted to keep trains running on schedule while minimizing passengers' waiting time at stops. The challenge was to automatically manage trains' arrivals and departures and maintain a chronological record of events. The company covered critical requirements for two systems with flexible, scalable software and leveraged hot "Standby" feature for server nodes and PLC configuration and control.

Jump-Start Business Activity Monitoring (BAM), Part 1: Introduction to Monitor Modeling - Learn Features of IBM WebSphere Business Monitor V6.0.2 | 2007-02-27 | IBM |
| IBM WebSphere Business Monitor is a tool to monitor business performance. It collects business performance-relevant data by extracting and aggregating information in business events. The operation of WebSphere Business Monitor is controlled by monitor models. This paper introduces to the core elements of a monitor model by walking through an example. A monitor model is constructed for a Business Activity Monitoring (BAM) scenario "Outside-to-in," starting with business requirements and adding technical detail until one has an executable model.

Bank Uses New Technology to Raise Productivity, Keeps In-House Developed Applications | 0000-00-00 | Microsoft |
| PT. Bank Lippo Tbk. offers commercial and retail banking services to 2.3 million individual and corporate account holders in Indonesia. Currently, the bank is in the process of refreshing its infrastructure. This offered an opportunity to standardize its software and operating system. During the Rapid Deployment Program (RDP) of Microsoft Windows Vista using the Release Candidate 1 (RC1) version, however, it was discovered that the 16-bit, as well as the software tool for managing its ATM network, did not run in Vista. Fortunately, the new Windows operating system came with Microsoft Virtual PC 2007. The 16-bit programs and Gasper Manager ran on Microsoft Windows XP, which ran inside Virtual PC in Windows Vista, without causing CPU utilization to go up to a risky level.

Voice System Clocking | 2007-01-01 | Cisco Systems |
| The Cisco Integrated Services Routers offer a variety of mechanisms for implementing and distributing clocking when connecting to external interfaces. This paper describes the clock accuracies delivered by service providers, clocking methods available within the Cisco Integrated Services Routers and considerations for deployments. Networks operated by service providers, such as PSTN or WAN providers, typically act as the clock source to any Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) platforms connected to these networks.

Capgemini Success Story: Citibank Taiwan | 2007-01-01 | Capgemini |
| Citibank Taiwan wanted to focus on core competence, to reduce the costs of Applications Management in Technology Service Group, and to leverage external professional resources on application management. Capgemini provided Applications Management services for Citibank GCB Taiwan in ATM, AVR & Internet Banking Authorization Front-End Systems, PC LAN application systems (including Lotus Notes and some MIS applications), Credit Card application systems, and data mining (using SAS). From April 2002, Capgemini also delivers Internet applications development and testing to Citibank Asia Pacific PC Banking COE (Center of Excellence). Technology of Citibank Taiwan is now able to focus on project management rather than coding.

Evaluation of Three CAC Methods: Gaussian Approximation Method, Method of Effective Bandwidth and Diffusion Approximation Method | 2006-12-18 | Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava |
| The greatly variable requirements of different applications, particularly those of video and data sources, make high demands on the development of traffic control in ATM networks. Connection admission control is a traffic control function which requires knowledge of traffic behavior, switching architecture, etc. and its impact on Quality of Service (QoS). Development of CAC schemes depends on many factors and it is not possible to have one single universal method suitable for all instances. CAC method must be first verified, if it is suitable as traffic control in ATM node with specific input traffic behavior. In this paper the intensive and weak properties of three CAC methods are presented: Gaussian, effective bandwidth and diffusion approximation method.

Performance Comparison of IP, MPLS and ATM Based Network Cores Using OPNET | 2006-08-05 | Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers |
| The core components of a network play vital role in its enhancement. For launching and providing Internet applications and services, vendors have come up with a variety of different technology based network cores and other components of Internet backbone. Among all the challenges for an efficient network core, traffic-routing is the most important. Both the routing algorithms and the router-technology are supposed to perform efficiently. The authors found that there are a number of technologies that offer packet routing service of which IP, ATM and MPLS are prominent. Some of the routers are designed to provide delivery of specific kind of traffic. The percentage of real time traffic (voice and video) over Internet is rapidly increasing due to growing trend of using real-time traffic oriented applications. People want to talk, watch TV, do video conferencing etc over Internet.

Migrating an Enterprise WAN From ATM to IP | 2006-08-01 | Intel |
| Lately, the telecommunications industry has deemphasized ATM in favor of IP. Providers are rapidly building IP infrastructure and offering lower-cost IP services. To take advantage of this industry shift, Intel engineers developed an architecture design and a phased migration plan to collapse their ATM network into an IP infrastructure while making the transition transparent to the users. Intel IT is undertaking a major WAN migration, moving their global network from Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) to Internet protocol (IP). This aligns the WAN technology direction with the telecommunications industry, ensuring that the network can support new services and future traffic growth, and helping Intel take advantage of low-cost bandwidth from telecommunications providers.
