  Kyotango City wanted to deploy a solution that allows for real-time, collaborative communication between the previously separated cities and which delivers sophisticated information and improved community services for its 66,000 citizens. Nortel and UNIADEX (a business partner of Kyotango City) recommended that the City deploy an optical network, which is more reliable, redundant, scalable, and cost-effective than the star-shaped Ethernet network the City originally considered deploying. By deploying a Nortel Optical Ethernet solution that leverages resilient packet ring (RPR) technology, Kyotango City can now connect the city halls of the six original towns and support a community intranet to deliver enhanced eGovernment services to its constituents.

  Optical technology promises to revolutionize data networking by providing enormous bandwidth for data transport at minimal cost. A key to cost reduction is to increase transparency, that is, to keep a data stream encoded as an optical signal for as long as possible. Wavelength switching increases transparency by allowing different data streams, each encoded in a different wavelength of light, to be independently routed through an optical network. This paper discusses Bell Labs-developed software tools that help design wavelength-switched optical networks. The software tools simultaneously minimize the cost of the designed network, reduce the time and cost to perform the design, and ensure compliance with engineering constraints.

  This paper presents a novel approach for joint optical network provisioning and Internet Protocol (IP) traffic engineering, in which the IP and optical networks collaboratively optimize a combined objective of network performance and lightpath provisioning cost. The authors develop a framework for distributed multilayer optimization. This framework is built upon the IP-over-Optical (IPO) overlay model, where each network domain has a limited view of the other. The formulation allows the two domains to communicate and coordinate their decisions through minimal information exchange.

  This paper considers the fault diagnosis problem in all-optical networks, focusing on probing schemes to detect faults. This paper work concentrates on non-adaptive probing schemes, in order to meet the stringent time requirements for fault recovery. This fault diagnosis problem motivates a new technical framework that the paper introduces: group testing with graph-based constraints. Using this framework, several new probing schemes are developed to detect network faults. The efficiency of these schemes often depends on the network topology; in many cases it shows that these schemes are near-optimal by providing tight lower bounds.

  Access networks based on a Single-Mode Fiber (SMF) using a Centralized Light Source (CLS) have attracted much attention recently due to their wavelength management flexibility and potential for cost reduction at customers' premises. Future networks, in addition, are likely to contain segments of MultiMode Fiber (MMF), whose core dimension is relatively large in comparison with its single-mode counterpart, substantially reducing fiber alignment constraints and the subsequent network construction and installation cost. In this study, a CLS-based Passive Optical Network (PON) is proposed, which will use a new generation of high-performance MMF optimized for a broad wavelength transmission window spanning from 1300 to 1550 nm, with a Bandwidth Distance Product (BDP) of 40 Gbit/s-km.

This creates a complex storage and retrieval problem. The company decided to invest in cost-effective HP SAN based on the HP StorageWorks enterprise modular array 12000 system.

  Motivated by the practical importance of ring topologies, the authors consider the capacity region of several simultaneous unicast sessions along a bidirectional ring network. The problem is an extension of the classical multicommodity flow problem in which one seeks to determine if a collection of traffic rates can be feasibly routed along a network with given edge capacities. In the case presented in this paper, the authors assume that the edges represent noisy or noise-free channels and they further permit the possibility of network coding. The proof uses recently developed progressive d-separating edge set bounds, new extensions of these bounds, as well as tools from the literature on the multicommodity flow problem.

  This paper experimentally demonstrates the multi-hop operation of an optical-label switching router with label swapping and optical 3R at each hop. A semiconductor optical amplifier based Mach-Zehnder interferometer wavelength converter performs reshaping. A Fabry-Perot filter all-optically recovers the clock from the incoming packets in burst mode. The synchronous modulation through a Mach-Zehnder modulator using the recovered clock performs retiming. The 3R regeneration maintains a good signal quality through multiple hops, which is important for scalable optical networking.
