whitepaper Retail Services Firm Uses Terminal Services to Give Customers Real-Time Data Access2008-03-06 Microsoft
Facility Maintenance Services (FMS) needed a reliable, safe solution to provide an access platform for its LOB application for its customers and remote employees. In making its decision, the company considered the cost of Windows Server 2008, the cost of the third-party skills required to deploy it, interoperability, performance, any new hardware costs, and the relative availability of the skills to use it out of the box. FMS considered the possibility of Citrix (which would cost FMS $30,000) and rewriting the LOB application entirely ($50,000). However, the company ultimately chose Windows Server 2008 because it expected the operating system to work with the LOB application and provide minimal disruption.

whitepaper A Protocol for Macro Mobility and Multihoming Notification in Wireless Mesh Networks2007-02-09 ETH Zurich
Wireless mesh networks are cost-efficient means to provide ubiquitous Internet access. For building large-scale wireless mesh networks, multiple access networks are joined together into one large network. In such large networks, nodes have to communicate with the Internet via multiple access gateways. The problem in such scenarios is how to make mesh nodes aware of the gateway over which data is sent towards the Internet. The goal of this paper is to propose a routing protocol-independent method that allows nodes to determine when they are switching the access network; to support switching of access networks; and to support multihoming.

whitepaper Competing Through Cooperation: Standard-Setting in Wireless Telecommunications2007-02-05 Cornell University
The study discussed in this paper examines cooperative standard-setting in wireless telecommunications. Focusing on the competition among firms to influence formal standardization, the roles of standard-setting committees, private alliances, and technical consortia are highlighted. The empirical context is Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), an international standards development organization. Panel data analyses suggest that participation in external technical consortia significantly enhance firms' contributions to the development of new specifications in 3GPP committees. Then, once a firm has become a central player in technical committees, it can further influence the standard-setting outcome through change requests to ongoing specifications. External alliances with fellow 3GPP members may also improve change request success.

whitepaper Facing a Real-Life Issue: Upgrading Outdated Communications Systems2006-11-01 01:00:28 Panasonic
Using an obsolete communications system can be dangerous, as learned by a rapidly growing city just north of Nashville, Tennessee. The city's communication system, which covered all municipal functions, such as police, fire, water, and more, needed to be replaced due to the difficulty of obtaining parts and appropriate service for their aging system - and with the growing population, the importance of upgrading was highlighted. The city needed a unified phone system that would seamlessly connect multiple sites, and consolidate multiple systems - but keeping cost and ease-of-implementation in mind.

Fast forward to post-upgrade: common technology, such as centralized voice mail, direct extensions, and wireless/desktop phones, is now experienced - but cost effectively. In addition to these benefits, vital security was increased across the city with the implementation of door-opener cards for employees and key city leaders. This white paper takes a look at the issues originally faced, which are still faced by many businesses today, and details the cost-effective and secure solutions selected, along with an overview of its easy implementation.
