Enhancing Application Awareness for More Services, Greater Efficiencies, and Better Control of Mobile, Wireline, and Cable Networks | 2006-12-01 | Cisco Systems |
| An exciting new era has dawned for service providers, because converged networks now carry multiple applications and types of services that can enhance provider offerings and enable brand differentiation. Now service providers are evolving into "Experience providers" that define themselves competitively by how well they provide and brand a consistent quality experience across network layers, applications, and different user devices. Vital to this evolution is the ability to manage different services so providers can deploy more offerings faster with optimized return on investments and profit margins. This paper examines the factors that have accelerated the need for application awareness and shows how it can be applied, in conjunction with enhanced user awareness, to improve the efficiency, profitability, security, and competitiveness of service provider networks.

Digital Transmission: Carrier-To-Noise, Signal-To-Noise & Modulation Error Ratio | 2006-11-01 | Cisco Systems |
| This paper provides a background on several signal quality metrics applicable to CMTS and cable network operation and how they relate to overall performance. The CMTS upstream SNR and cable modem or STB downstream SNR estimates are explained. Noise, as discussed in this paper and unless defined otherwise, refers to Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN), or simply white noise, also known as thermal noise. Interference such as narrowband ingress and burst or impulse noise is usually treated separately.

Enhance Your IT Foundation With Blade Servers | 0000-00-00 | Hewlett-Packard (HP) |
| Companies around the world are adopting blade technology as their next-generation IT faster than any other server architecture. But why? Simply put, the majority of costs of IT today are from operations such as maintenance, power and cooling, and downtime. Blades, because of their consolidated design and integrated management, offer a better way to not only reduce costs of operations, but also to eliminate much of the infrastructure hardware costs up front, including networking switches, management software licenses, and cables.

Mitigating Attacks on Open Functionality in SMS-Capable Cellular Networks | 2006-10-03 | Pennsylvania State University |
| The transformation of telecommunications networks from homogeneous closed systems providing only voice services to internet-connected open networks that provide voice and data services presents significant security challenges. For example, recent research illustrated that a carefully crafted DoS attack via text messaging could incapacitate all voice communications in a metropolitan area with little more than a cable modem.

Cisco Dynamic Flow Control Solution | 2006-10-01 | Cisco Systems |
| Cisco Dynamic Flow Control (DFC) is a service-control engineering solution for service providers that focus on real-time bandwidth allocation for shaping end-user traffic. The solution enables new "Connected Life" services, while ensuring quality of experience for subscribers. DFC extends the availability of the network's most valuable resource - its bandwidth capacity. The infrastructure of the DFC solution includes PacketCable Multimedia (PCMM) technology in conjunction with Deep Packet Inspection (DPI), both of which are needed to deliver bandwidth-controlled services to the end user. This paper describes a solution that enables service providers to offer differentiated services to subscribers based on client applications in use today, as well as in the future.

Inspection and Cleaning Procedures for Fiber-Optic Connections | 2006-09-26 | Cisco Systems |
| Clean fiber optic components are a requirement for quality connections between fiber optic equipment. One of the most basic and important procedures for the maintenance of fiber optic systems is to clean the fiber optic equipment. It is important that every fiber connector be inspected and cleaned prior to mating. This paper describes inspection and cleaning processes for fiber optic connections. The procedures in the paper describe basic inspection techniques and processes of cleaning for fiber optic cables, bulkheads, and adapters used in fiber optic connections.

10GBASE-T: 10G Ethernet on Copper Cabling | 2006-09-12 | Solarflare Communications |
| 10GBASE-T offers two important attributes to network managers and IT professionals planning data centers and enterprise networks. First, it supports legacy copper UTP cabling and for new installations of copper cabling, it maintains the structured cabling paradigm and support for RJ-45 connections and patch panels. Second, 10GBASE-T will enable over time lower cost 10G interconnects by enabling high-density 10G switches. Because of greater density, and relatively low component cost, 10GBASE-T will enable network equipment manufacturers to lower dramatically the cost of 10 Gigabit Ethernet interconnect.

Building for Bandwidth: How to Choose the Right Cabling Infrastructure for 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) | 2006-08-01 | Ethernet Alliance |
| The same scenario faces network planners today as cabling systems are designed to withstand multiple replacements of active equipment. Most active network equipment - including computers, servers, Ethernet switches, routers and hubs - have a maximum useful life of three to five years before they become obsolete. In contrast, structured cabling historically has a useful life of 10 to 15 years. Therefore, the structured cabling one installs must outlive at least three generations of networking equipment upgrades. The challenge is how to determine what types of active equipment will exist in three product generations; the answer can be found with IEEE 802.3. This organization consists of industry experts representing major networking cable, component, and equipment manufacturers.

Troubleshooting Digitally Modulated Signals With a QAM Analyzer | 2006-06-13 | Cisco Systems |
| Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) is a modulation scheme which conveys data by changing (modulating) the amplitude of two carrier waves. This paper gives an overview of the features available in many QAM analyzers, and more importantly, how to use those features to troubleshoot problems with digitally modulated signals. This understanding is critical to achieving and maintaining the reliability necessary for new services being deployed on today's cable networks.
