whitepaper LTE-Advanced: Future of Mobile Broadband2009-09-01 Tata Consultancy Services
Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) a group of telecommunication associations working towards the development and maintenance of a Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) including evolved radio access technologies, has started working on Long-Term Evolution advanced (LTE-Advanced) in order to achieve the requirements of next generation technology. The key goals for this evolution are increased data rate, improved spectrum efficiency, improved coverage and reduced latency. The end results of these goals are significantly improving service provisioning and reduction of operator costs for different traffic scenarios. The requirements for LTE-Advanced are agreed and the radio interface techniques are currently under discussion.

whitepaper Cost-Efficient Network Architecture for Addressing Low-Income Segments2007-11-09 ericsson
GSM is the world's most successful mobile system. As subscriber numbers continue to grow around the world, the challenge for GSM is to serve regions that are completely different from the environment for which it was originally created. As GSM expands into areas and segments with low per capita income, the cost per added subscriber must continue to fall. As this white paper describes, this can be achieved with a number of improvements to the GSM Radio Access Network (RAN), which result in improved network architecture and significant savings in Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

whitepaper A Silent SMS Denial of Service (DoS) Attack2007-10-31 University of Pretoria
Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) is a popular mobile communications network. Short Message Service (SMS) is an easily adopted person-to-person communications technology for mobile devices. The GSM architecture allows for the insertion of mass application-generated SMS messages directly into the network infrastructure. In contrast, a mass continuous send of "Silent" SMS messages constitutes an invisible Denial of Service (DoS) attack on a mobile handset. Such a mobile handset DoS attack may be conducted for economic advantage to elude another party from communicating. This paper describes, from a technical perspective, how a silent application-generated denial of service (DoS) SMS attack is conducted.
