Will Facebook Get You Hired or Fired? | 2009-08-10 | Perimeter eSecurity |
| Phishing is a common method cyber criminals use to lure individuals into giving up their personal information. Spear phishing is where the criminals target a specific group of users, for example all customers of a particular bank or credit union. Whaling is an even more directed attack at one particular person. Although these attacks are often directed towards high net-worth individuals, cyber-criminals use social networking sites and other online databases to obtain the majority of the information which allows them to commit these crimes.

Web 2.0 and Security | 2009-08-01 | Borderware Technologies |
| The next time a company claims that it's "Web 2.0," test their features against the list above. The more points they score, the more they are worthy of the name. However, that as Web 2.0 technologies are fairly new and although their value and usefulness are increasing daily, so are the security exposures that they bring. Reap the benefits these next-generation technologies offer, but ensure that networks are protected with a solid Web security strategy to combat the vast range of cyber-based threats that are associated with the use of these Web 2.0 sites and applications.

Cybersecurity Review: Background, Threatscape, Best-Practices and Resources | 2009-05-01 | Eset |
| The target of cybercrime centers on information - the data that is electronically stored for retrieval and subsequent use. To get an idea of the scale of the threat of cybercrime, it takes a look at the overall use of the Internet, theft or exposure of personal data through data breaches and the amount of money lost to a cybercrime called "Phishing" - one of the most common online attacks where a person is socially engineered to provide personally identifiable information by someone posing to be a trusted source.

Seven Practical Steps for Federal Cyber Security and FISMA Compliance | 2009-04-28 | Tripwire |
| The number of security breaches of federal information systems and cases of improper access to these systems continues to grow at an alarming rate. In fact, federal civilian agencies reported three times more cyber security incidents in 2008 than in 2006, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). And that's just the number of reported incidents; an official at the DHS believes the number may be higher. A quick Internet search reveals the continued pervasiveness of security breaches of federal information systems.

Special RSA Online Fraud Report: What to Expect in 2009 and Beyond | 2009-04-01 | RSA Security |
| Online fraud is a non-stop threat to organizations around the globe, and cyber-criminals have no intention of slowing down the pace. In fact, they continue to improve their technology, launch increasingly sophisticated attacks, and use advanced social engineering techniques to dupe online users into falling for scams. Also, global conditions, such as the receding economy and vulnerabilities in the financial markets, are likely to have an impact on the evolution of cyber-crime.

Measuring Global Denial of Service Attacks | 2009-03-31 | CCD COE |
| Cyberattacks as a tool for information warfare are not new and have been popular for well over a decade. Their growing prevalence, however, is a disturbing trend that requires study. Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are one of the most widely crippling elements of many cyberwarfare campaigns. Designed to overwhelm a victim's infrastructure with junk traffic, their impact has been a significant element in some cyber warfare campaigns. As seen in Georgia, Estonia, and against dissident groups, these attacks can affect much more than just the specific targets. Furthermore, with the growing sophistication of attackers, people see that they can strike key infrastructure elements.

Mathematical and Statistical Opportunities in Cyber Security | 2009-03-01 | Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory |
| The role of mathematics in a complex system such as the Internet has yet to be deeply explored. This paper summarizes some of the important and pressing problems in cyber security from the viewpoint of open science environments. The author starts by posing the question "What fundamental problems exist within cyber security research that can be helped by advanced mathematics and statistics?" The first and most important assumption is that access to real-world data is necessary to understand large and complex systems like the Internet. The second assumption is that many proposed cyber security solutions could critically damage both the openness and the productivity of scientific research.

Increasing Cyber Security Readiness With Adaptive Threat Management: Essential Insights for Strengthening the Federal Response to Cyber Attacks | 2009-03-01 | Juniper Networks |
| The U.S. Federal Government depends on the vast array of systems and networks in cyberspace to support all aspects of their operations. Unfortunately, this dependence on cyberspace leaves agencies vulnerable to cyber attacks. Threats are growing in number and sophistication, originating from both domestic and foreign sources and encompassing intentional attacks as well as inadvertent causes. Despite ongoing investments in security products, many federal IT managers feel their infrastructure is inadequate for combating rapidly evolving threats and for ensuring compliance with government mandates and directives. By leveraging existing network infrastructures, Juniper Networks Adaptive Threat Management Solutions enable federal agencies to realize a greater return on their security investment, reducing TCO while boosting cyber security, compliance and continuity of operations.
