How CIOs Should Spend Their Day | 2007-01-06 01:00:21 | Forrester Research |
| With the exception of possibly the CEO, the CIO's business calendar is the most difficult to manage. The key? CIOs should balance time management in ways that do not deprive any key constituents of essential time. Each stakeholder group is equally important, and a disproportionate allocation of the CIO's focus and attention will be detrimental to the enterprise and to the CIO's success. Forrester's 30-30-30-10 model forces disciplined balance across constituents, which are classified into four groups: above, across, below, and yourself. This time model will keep IT front-of-mind in the business and allow CIOs to do what they do best: proving and delivering IT value to the enterprise. | |||

| How, then, do we deal fairly and firmly with under-performing employees? The secret is to give effective feedback on a regular basis, link that feedback to a 6-12 month coaching plan, link individual coaching plans to your company's performance review process (if you have one), and, if the situation warrants, link that to progressive discipline | |||

University Improves Instruction With Range of Easy-to-Distribute Software | 2006-11-29 01:00:19 | Microsoft |
| Washington State University (WSU) was having difficulty providing its students and faculty with the developer software necessary for a high-quality education. In many of its courses, WSU used technologies from Microsoft and other software companies. But those tools were costly, and students were limited to using them only in university labs. As a result, WSU could not provide the range and detail of instruction that it wanted. To address these issues, several WSU departments joined the MSDN Academic Alliance. Through this inexpensive program, WSU gained easy access to a variety of Microsoft tools, applications, and documentation. As a result, students and faculty can now download software from the Web and students can use the software on their personal computers. | |||

Tekmark Draws on Lucent Worldwide Services Experience to Achieve TL9000 Certification | 2006-11-29 01:00:19 | Alcatel-Lucent |
| In early 2004, Tekmark executives decided to undertake the arduous journey of obtaining TL9000 certification, which is the telecommunications industry's add-ons to the famous ISO 9001:2000 quality management certification. The company knew it would take templates to help guide them through the certification process. The company knew it needed to do an internal assessment of their existing operational processes and map these to corresponding ISO processes. They needed a work plan of tasks that would fill the gaps in the existing processes. They decided to look for a consultant. Lucent was their first choice. Lucent provided Tekmark with a package from its Quality Assessment service, including training, knowledge transfer and auditing. | |||

CIOs: Do Your Peers Need An IT University? | 2006-12-05 01:00:34 | Forrester Research |
| CIOs often complain privately that their business peers, the heads of functional departments and business units, don't "get" IT. Furthermore, they don't understand the basics of processes, systems, and data and don't grasp the importance of their own roles as sponsors of IT initiatives. Rather than complain, CIOs should sponsor and organize a seminar series for business execs, tackling key knowledge gaps and educating them on the role they and their team must play to ensure that projects sponsored by the business will succeed. |
