  The Kentucky Department of Education manages the public educational system for the state's 174 school districts. An internal IT services group, the Office of Education Technology (OET), oversees the schools' Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 e-mail environment, which has more than 750,000 mailboxes. That environment was plagued with a growing spam problem, which slowed down the system and resulted in lost time and productivity for students, teachers, and IT administrators. To fix the problem, OET deployed a hosted spam-filtering solution from Microsoft Exchange Hosted Services. Since then, the department has seen improved protection against spam while realizing millions of dollars in savings related to e-mail management costs. The department's solution has also restored lost instructional and administrative time, and empowered individual school districts with better e-mail management tools.

  SPNEGO, or the Simple and Protected GSSAPI Negotiation Mechanism, enables a straightforward Single Sign-On (SSO) environment for WebSphere in Microsoft Active Directory environments. In addition to SSO for web applications, SPNEGO can also be used to authenticate both J2EE and .NET web services clients. This paper explain how both J2EE clients and .NET clients can generate client stubs from exported web services, and then engage the SPNEGO protocol to provide SSO authentication to the WebSphere Application Server hosting these services. RedHat Enterprise Linux 4 was used as the OS to host the instance of WebSphere Application Server for the examples. An instance of Windows Server 2003 hosted the Active Directory and a Windows XP instance in the AD domain was used to host the application clients.

The quality of protection provided by a firewall directly depends on the quality of its policy (i.e., configuration). Due to the lack of tools for verifying firewall policies, most firewalls on the Internet have been plagued with policy errors. A firewall policy error either creates security holes that will allow malicious traffic to sneak into a private network or blocks legitimate traffic and disrupts normal business processes, which in turn could lead to irreparable, if not tragic, consequences. This paper proposes a firewall verification tool in this paper. This tool takes as input a firewall policy and a given property, then outputs whether the policy satisfies the property.
