whitepaper Ninety Percent of University's Students Adopt New Web-Based Communication Services2008-04-01 Microsoft
Based in Brookings, South Dakota, South Dakota State University (SDSU) is well-known for its friendly campus community. However, SDSU's in-house e-mail solution was unreliable and only 5 percent of students used it. The university began looking for a reliable, hosted, Web-based e-mail service that would be popular with students and enhance their communication with faculty and staff. When Microsoft released Microsoft Live@edu, SDSU listened to its students' preference for the Windows Live Hotmail e-mail service and became the first university to sign on. With Live@edu, each student gets a Web-based e-mail account and security-enhanced instant messaging, blogging, and other online communication and collaboration services.

whitepaper Alameda County Uses RFID to Speed Election Results2008-04-01 Motorola
After Alameda County's 810 polling places close on Election Day, delivering the voting equipment quickly to the county's vote count facility in Oakland requires an efficient, secure, tightly-run process. Working closely with Alameda County, Motorola partner RFID Global Solution developed the SecureVote solution. SecureVote provides RFID tags for each piece of voting equipment, matching it to the ID tag on the outside of the bags. County employees, using Motorola MC9000-G RFID handheld readers, can quickly scan the RFID tag on the outside of the bag, as well as the items inside without opening the bag, to verify that all equipment is present.

Sirona Dental Systems is a leading global manufacturer of dental equipment. Headquartered in Bensheim, Germany, the company develops innovative devices and systems for dental practices, teaching hospitals, and dental laboratories. Using Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) or the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), they connected to the corporate network from airports, conference rooms, or hotel rooms, accessing the software and information they need. However, because users needed administrator rights on their PC to connect to the WLAN, Sirona left its systems vulnerable to security risks. By deploying the Windows Vista operating system, Sirona now provides its employees with a wide range of security features that offer enhanced protection.

whitepaper Labor Finders Gets Enterprise-Style Security at SMB Prices2008-03-31 Secure Computing
Growing from a single office to 35 offices in a relatively short period of time presents special challenges, Labor Finders had legitimate concerns about competitors and others attempting to cause denial-of-service attacks. The customer database as well as employee database also required special treatment, since this information would be very valuable to a competitor - and so a solution that would provide outbound protection and prevent data leakage was of paramount importance. After evaluating solutions from Checkpoint, Cisco, and Barracuda Technologies, Labor Finders selected Secure Computing. Secure SnapGear met all of their requirements. Since Secure SnapGear uses PPTP tunnels, there is no additional software required on the remote users, and that makes deployment transparent.

Trading Technologies wanted to implement Microsoft Network Access Protection (NAP) as part of a solution using compliance requirements to assess the security risk posed by a computer or device attempting to connect to its corporate network. The company also wanted to use NAP to control network remote access by mobile devices that may become non-compliant with corporate policies. Trading Technologies deployed Windows Server 2008 Enterprise (64-bit version) on one server through a new, manual installation rather than an upgrade. It was deployed on hardware infrastructure that consisted of an IBM BladeCenter LS21 server, connected to a Hitachi AMS 1000 storage system using a QLogic 2462S host bus adapter for connectivity.

Somma and his team were focused on performance, cost of additional hardware, operating system capabilities, interoperability with its existing technologies, as well as Sebago's reliance on Websense for third-party Internet content filtering. Rather than search for a custom presentation virtualization solution, Somma turned to Sebago's stalwart IT partner, WinXnet, a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner, to recommend a secure and high-performing solution that could clean up its remote access issues and reinforce its network.
