Cisco TrustSec: Enabling Switch Security Services | 2007-12-01 | Cisco Systems |
| As the separation between public and private networks becomes increasingly blurred, enterprise administrators have begun to recognize that they must find better ways to control access to corporate resources and information. Isolated best-in-class solutions no longer meet their operational requirements. Identity authentication needs to be applied across all access methods in a consistent manner. Access to critical applications and network resources must be provided to any user on any device or any platform across a variety of access points. With so many types of users and access methods, a converged policy engine is required to manage user roles and access control requirements. And the integrity and confidentiality of transactions frequently must be ensured, even within the campus. | |||

Addressing Wireless Threats With Integrated Wireless IDS and IPS | 2007-12-01 | Cisco Systems |
| Wireless LAN security has improved dramatically since the introduction of IEEE 802.11 in 1997. When the most recent security standard, IEEE 802.11i, is employed, wireless networks are as secure- or more secure-as many wired network implementations. However, because of the ability of wireless LANs to penetrate beyond the physical boundaries of an enterprise, wireless threats exist from unauthorized infrastructure and clients. The good news for IT managers is that these threats can be detected and prevented using the Cisco Unified Wireless Network while it simultaneously provides service to wireless clients.

Providing Essential Security Technologies for Leading European Supplier of Plumbing and Heating Systems | 2007-11-30 | Symantec |
| Founded in a carpentry workshop in Finland almost 90 years ago, Uponor has grown over the years to become a global business, supplying plumbing and heating systems for the residential and commercial building markets. Challenged by a multiplicity of overlapping security technologies in its global network, Uponor standardized on Symantec Endpoint Protection to create a reliable, effective, easy to use total end point security solution. In the Nordic region alone, Symantec Endpoint Protection is forecast to save Uponor thousands of euros over three years and the company is benefiting from advanced threat protection in a dynamic and evolving threat landscape.

Evaluating Host Intrusion Detection Systems. | 2007-11-28 | university of maryland |
| Host Intrusion Detection Systems (HIDSs) are critical tools needed to provide indepth security to computer systems. Quantitative metrics for HIDSs are necessary for comparing HIDSs or determining the optimal operational point of a HIDS. While HIDSs and Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDSs) greatly differ, similar evaluations have been performed on both types of IDSs by assessing metrics associated with the classification algorithm (e.g., true positives, false positives). This dissertation motivates the necessity of additional characteristics to better describe the performance and effectiveness of HIDSs. The proposed additional characteristics are the ability to collect data where an attack manifests (visibility), the ability of the HIDS to resist attacks in the event of an intrusion (attack resiliency), and the ability to timely detect attacks (efficiency).

TechNet Webcast: Improving Desktop Security and Deployment (Part 5 of 7): Deploying IPSec With Windows Vista (Level 200) | 2007-11-26 | Microsoft |
| The presenter of this webcast looks at the new network stack in the Windows Vista operating system, and talks about how innovations in the stack can help secure the network by enabling new features to filter network traffic and prevent unwanted forwarding. The presenter shows the new features in Windows Firewall based on the Windows Filtering Platform (WFP). This webcast covers the new rules system, which has many scenarios already defined in an easy-to-use interface, and shows how Windows Vista helps secure connections with tightly-integrated Internet Protocol Security (IPSec).

Diverse Firewall Design | 2007-11-26 | Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers |
| Firewalls are the mainstay of enterprise security and the most widely adopted technology for protecting private networks. An error in a firewall policy either creates security holes that will allow malicious traffic to sneak into a private network or blocks legitimate traffic and disrupts normal business processes, which in turn could lead to irreparable, if not tragic, consequences. It has been observed that most firewall policies on the Internet are poorly designed and have many errors. Therefore, how to design firewall policies correctly is an important issue. This paper propose the method of diverse firewall design, which consists of three phases: a design phase, a comparison phase, and a resolution phase.

Using Artificial Intelligence in Intrusion Detection Systems | 2007-11-19 | Helsinki University of Technology |
| Artificial Intelligence could make the use of Intrusion Detection Systems a lot easier than it is today. They could learn the preferences of the security officers and show the kind of alerts first that the officer has previously been most interested. As always, the hardest thing with learning AIs, is to make them learn the right things. AIs could learn the same things as a rule-based system by watching a security officer work. AIs could also link together events that, by themselves, are insignificant but when combined may indicate that an attack is underway. This paper compares AI-based solutions to traditional IDS solutions, and analyze how the AIs could be taught.

Spam and SPIM: A Growing Threat to Messaging Systems | 2007-11-15 | Symantec |
| Spam has been a serious problem for email administrators and users alike, growing from one in six emails in 2002 to approximately three out of four emails today. After five years of dealing with spam and throwing significant resources at the problem, 54% of messaging decision-makers in mid-sized and large organizations still view spam as a serious or very serious problem according to a recent Osterman Research survey. In addition to SPAM, SPIM also poses a significant threat to the organization. SPIM allows SPAM to be sent into the network through the employee's IM accounts. The attendee of this webcast will learn how SPAM and SPIM have caused organizations to invest to combat them as well as realizing that they have to protect their whole messaging infrastructure.
