Botnets: The New Threat Landscape | 2007-12-01 | Cisco Systems |
| A botnet is an army of compromised machines, also known as "Zombies," that are under the command and control of a single "Botmaster." The rise of consumer broadband has greatly increased the power of botnets to launch crippling Denial of Service (DoS) attacks on servers, infect millions of computers with spyware and other malicious code, steal identity data, send out vast quantities of spam, and engage in click fraud, blackmail, and extortion. Botnets are the primary security threat on the Internet today. It is easy to commission botnet attack services and hackers are quicker than ever to exploit new vulnerabilities. This white paper discusses the typical lifecycle of a botnet, the damage caused by botnet attacks, and the most effective detection and mitigation techniques.

PCI: How to Safeguard Customer Data Against Real Threats | 2007-11-19 | netForensics |
| Through PCI DSS, the card associations are taking a stand against online fraud, misuse of cardholder data and ID theft. PCI requires affected organizations to continuously monitor and manage the cardholder data environment, while maintaining a strong security posture against breaches and attacks. Protecting cardholder information involves addressing the risks associated with countless system components, including network devices, servers and applications. Merchants and service providers must implement broad policy-driven security programs to reduce the overall risk associated with storing, processing or transmitting cardholder data. nFX SIM One, along with the alignment of people, processes and technology, enables retailers and payment service providers to meet PCI objectives and ensure a resilient infrastructure.

Password Management Using Doodles | 2007-11-15 | Association for Computing Machinery |
| The average computer user needs to remember a large number of text username and password combinations for different applications, which places a large cognitive load on the user. Consequently users tend to write down passwords, use easy to remember (and guess) passwords, or use the same password for multiple applications, leading to security risks. This paper describes the use of personalized hand-drawn "Doodles" for recall and management of password information. Since doodles can be easier to remember than text passwords, the cognitive load on the user is reduced. The method involves recognizing doodles by matching them against stored prototypes using handwritten shape matching techniques. The paper has built a system which manages passwords for web applications through a web browser.
