The West Chester Area School District is one of the largest districts in Pennsylvania. Of late, the district upgraded its server operating system, which also prompted a look at upgrading the district's Citrix VPN solution. They wanted to be able to use a web interface for terminal sessions rather than the full Citrix client. To do this, they needed to upgrade to Citrix Presentation Server. The district thoroughly evaluated remote access solutions from a number of vendors and chose the F5 FirePass appliance recommended by its longstanding technology partner Comm Solutions.

whitepaper RSEA Engineering Protects Corporate Systems With Juniper Networks Solutions2008-06-01 Juniper Networks
Taiwan's Retired Servicemen Engineering Agency (RSEA) tried to create its own secure network using IPSec Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology, but the system proved to be unwieldy and unreliable. To support the expense reporting system, RSEA needed a secure and reliable VPN infrastructure that could be deployed quickly-and enable its field staff to connect to key business systems at the Taipei data center. To address these issues, RSEA looked to SSL VPN solutions that would allow its IT personnel to remotely set up and manage accounts, enabling enterprise resources to be delivered quickly to users. RSEA deployed Juniper Networks portfolio of firewall/VPN solutions, especially Juniper's SSL VPN solution.

whitepaper The Energy Cost of SSL in Deeply Embedded Systems2008-06-01 Sun Microsystems
As the number of potential applications for tiny, battery-powered, "Mote"-like, deeply embedded devices grows, so does the need to simplify and secure interactions with such devices. Embedding a secure web server (capable of HTTP over SSL, aka HTTPS), enables these devices to be monitored and controlled securely via a user-friendly, browser-based interface. This paper presents the first empirical energy analysis of the Internet's dominant security protocol, SSL, on highly constrained devices. The author has enhanced Sizzle, the tiny-footprint HTTPS stack, with energy conserving features and measured its performance on a Telos mote. The paper shows that the key exchange phase, which consumes much more energy than bulk encryption and authentication, amortizes well over the transmission of a few kilobytes of application data.
