Welcome to the June Edition of the MessageLabs Intelligence monthly report. This report provides the latest threat trends for June 2006, as well as a quarterly retrospective, to keep you informed regarding the ongoing fight against viruses, spam and other unwelcome content.
whitepaper Securing and Accelerating Branch Office Communications Using ISA Server 20062006-09-06 01:00:12 Microsoft
Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2006 can be used to help solve the problems of securing, managing, and accelerating branch office connections to the main office. ISA Server 2006 is an integrated firewall, Web proxy, remote access Virtual Private Network (VPN) server, and site-to-site VPN gateway. Each of the ISA Server 2006 technologies can be applied individually or together to provide an excellent combination of security, reliability, and accessibility for branch office employees to access main office information resources.
whitepaper ISA Server 2006 Firewall Core2006-09-06 01:00:12 Microsoft
ISA Server 2006 is an integrated firewall, remote access VPN, site-to-site VPN, and Web proxy and caching server solution. ISA Server 2006 can be configured to act in all of these roles or any subset of them. This enables ISA Server to provide a flexible network security solution for businesses of all sizes and with differing security requirements. The ISA Server firewall core consists of the Firewall Engine driver and the Firewall service. The Firewall Engine driver runs in kernel mode and the Firewall service runs in user mode. Both the Firewall Engine driver and the Firewall service interface with the ISA Server Policy Engine.
whitepaper Webcast: Does Your Anti-virus REALLY Protect You Against Spyware?2006-09-18 08:57:03 Sunbelt Software
While most enterprise anti-virus software includes at least some protection against spyware, it's important to remember that anti-spyware functionality is just an afterthought in the majority of anti-virus solutions available today.

So it stands to reason that anti-virus tools that were designed first and foremost to scan for viruses and worms won't be as effective at detecting adware and spyware. With their focus primarily on files and processes, anti-virus solutions may simply not detect tell-tale signs of spyware such as groups of offending registry keys.

Check out this TechRepublic Webcast, now available on demand, to hear Sunbelt Software's President, Alex Eckelberry, and Director of Malware Research, Eric Howes, discuss spyware detection and why the lack of a specific and aggressive anti-spyware strategy can leave your company vulnerable to a host of contemporary security threats.

Moderated by James Hilliard of TechRepublic, the discussion covers these important topics and more:

  • The unique characteristics of spyware
  • Why anti-virus solutions may not always effectively detect and remove spyware
  • The key differences between anti-virus products and dedicated anti-spyware solutions

Independent tests have proven that stand-alone anti-spyware products are better than anti-virus solutions at detecting and removing spyware from networked computers. So check out this on-demand Webcast to learn more about the threats associated with spyware and the benefits of including a dedicated anti-spyware solution in your overall security posture.

whitepaper TechNet Webcast: Implementing Network and Perimeter Security (Level 300)2006-05-18 01:00:28 Microsoft
As enterprises grow, firewalls get more complicated. Through this webcast one can learn how to use hardware and software firewalls for network and application filtering, and how to implement intrusion detection mechanisms. It shows how technologies such as Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2004, Microsoft Windows Firewall, Internet Protocol Security, and Network Access Quarantine can help to achieve a balance of access and security.
whitepaper Configuring ISA Server 2004 as an Exchange Frontend Server in the DMZ (Part 2)2006-10-20 01:00:16 TechGenix
Ever since ISA Server 2004 has been available, there have been quite different opinions on which is the best design strategy for publishing Exchange Server 2003 services securely on the web. This paper delves a little deeper into the configuration tasks that need to be done when configuring ISA Server 2004 as a Reverse Proxy Server in the DMZ which is protected by two other Firewalls.
whitepaper Endpoint Security and Today's Threat Landscape2006-12-16 01:00:21 Symantec
Endpoint compliance solutions help enterprises enforce security by guaranteeing that all devices connected to a network are running the appropriate security solutions, are configured correctly, and possess up-to-date patches. In networked business environment, where enterprises must safely provide access to information assets for collaboration among various stakeholders, endpoint security protection is essential. This paper looks at some of the specific ways in which the threat landscape is shifting. It then suggests how enterprises can protect their endpoint devices against both known and unknown attacks with desktop firewall, host-based intrusion prevention, and adaptive protection technologies.
whitepaper Trojan White Paper2006-06-21 01:00:38 Igniteds Security Community
Many home users are kept in the dark about Trojans, what they are exactly, and the force behind them. The Trojan scene is quite an interesting one, one which this paper explains in order to give readers a better understanding of Trojans and the people that create and use them, After all there is more to Trojans than just the Trojans themselves. The paper will also detail the technologies the latest Trojans incorporate in order to make them selves stealthier and/or harder to remove. The general purpose of this paper is to educate the reader about Trojans.
whitepaper Firewall Rules Analysis2006-05-02 Mahasarakham University
This paper proposes a method to analyze the firewall policy or rule-set using Relational Algebra and Raining 2D-Box Model. It can discover all the anomalies in the firewall rule-set in the format that is usually used by many firewall products such as Cisco Access Control List, IPTABLES, IPCHAINS and Check Point Firewall-1. While the existing analyzing methods consider the anomalies between any two rules in the firewall rule-set, more than two rules are considered together at the same time to discover the anomaly. Therefore all the hidden anomalies can be found in the firewall rule-set. Results from analyzing can be used with the proposed rules-combination method presented in this paper, to minimize the firewall rule without changing the policy.

whitepaper Building a Secure Foundation for Enterprise Mobility2006-06-30 19:08:06 Motorola
Because the boundaries between wired and wireless networks are blurring, today's enterprises must adopt a security posture that makes sense for both environments. This white paper from Motorola describes the unique challenges associated with securing wireless communications and outlines a holistic approach to mobile security that integrates four key environmental considerations: people, process, policy, and technology.
