Optimizing Tunneled Grid Connectivity Across Firewalls | 2009-01-10 | Australian Computer Society |
| Grids today generally assume that concurrent network connections are possible among many processors attached to high-capacity networks. However, inter-network boundaries dividing independent institutions often have firewalls, typically to restrict how many and which ports are accessible. In some cases, ports are opened indefinitely for Grid applications, but this compromises security significantly. On the other hand, solutions that manage port openings in an ad-hoc manner for applications are non-trivial to implement. An alternative firewall traversal technique is required that will provide manageable openings with less complexity involved. This is possible through proxies and managed tunnels using ports already authorized across the firewalls.

An MTIDD Based Firewall: Using Decision Diagrams for Packet Filtering | 2009-01-06 | Springer Science+Business Media |
| This paper explores the use of Multi-Terminal Interval Decision Diagrams (MTIDDs) as the central structure of a firewall packet filtering mechanism. This is done by first relating the packet filtering problem to predicate logic, then implementing a prototype which is used in an empirical evaluation. The main benefits of the MTIDD structure are that it provides access to Boolean algebra over filters, efficient classification time, and a compact representation. Results from the empirical evaluation shows that MTIDDs are scalable in terms of memory usage: a 50,000 rule filter requires only 3MB of memory, and efficient for packet classification: it is able to handle more rules than the schemes it was compared to without causing a degradation in performance.

Use of Hessian in a Desktop Financial Application to Communicate With EJBs | 2009-01-04 | Caucho Technology |
| International Decision Systems (IDS) acquired an existing Swing-based desktop equipment finance application which used a proprietary communication protocol. This protocol was deemed inefficient and difficult to maintain, so it was necessary to find an alternative that would integrate easily with both the client and server components of the application. The protocol needed to be efficient and be able to pass through a firewall. Hessian was evaluated by IDS and within a few hours a prototype was ready. The ease of implementation made it possible for IDS engineers to determine quickly that Hessian was a highly efficient and fast alternative. It also met the requirements that it support communication with EJBs and pass through firewalls.

Integrated Intrusion Prevention & the Network Firewall | 2009-01-01 | Check Point Software Technologies |
| Most people think of integrated intrusion prevention as standalone or dedicated IPS appliances or software. However, in many situations, the actual need is for intrusion prevention that is integrated into the core firewall and into other security enforcement points. What to think about when deploying intrusion prevention into the overall network defense arsenal? The presenter shows how integrated intrusion prevention technologies can address security concerns of data loss, compliance, and reduced downtime due to attacks and threats.

Making Web 2.0 Work for Your Enterprise: External Deployments | 2009-01-01 | Oracle |
| Making Web 2.0 work for your enterprise is more than just deploying a one-off blog or wiki. Organizations will need to extend beyond to an array of custom social applications that improve productivity across many business processes and spur innovation throughout the enterprise. These new user-focused, participatory tools require the same high availability, security, and integration with existing systems and applications that mission-critical processes and applications require. Oracle Fusion Middleware's portal, user interaction, and Enterprise 2.0 platform empowers communities, increases innovation, and transforms the enterprise into a more-socially connected organization that can react faster and more effectively to the market while providing the enterprise-class performance enterprises require.

Award Winning Australian University Chooses 3Com as It Expands Into Dubai Knowledge Village | 2009-01-01 | 3Com |
| In 2000, the University of Wollongong won Australia's most prestigious higher education award, 'University of the Year.' The university is acclaimed for its effective application of digital technologies in preparing students to enter an e-world. Its Dubai Campus maintains exemplifies the quality of education the university provides. University had have different communication needs and, therefore, different network configurations and devices. Also, the network lacked both Layer 3 Switching and DMZ capabilities necessary to allow unauthorized users onto the network without subjecting the network to the potential for hostile attack. After investigating solutions from a number of leading suppliers, and conducting a thorough series of trials, the University of Wollongong installed a solution that combines 3Com XRN (eXpandable Resilient Networking) technology and switches and firewalls.

Investment in 3Com Security Technology Yields Top Marks for Ibmec Educational Institute | 2009-01-01 | 3Com |
| Ibmec is dedicated to educational and professional training in business, law, and economics, with five facilities located in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Belo Horizonte. Security has consistently been a primary concern; the institution believes security is essential to its technological infrastructure in order to avoid leaking academic information, to prevent invasion of data center servers and intranets, and to maintain the reliability and integrity of the institution's operations. Ibmec deployed 3Com Embedded Firewall Solution. After deploying the solution, it was easy to streamline security parameters using the browser-based interface to the policy server.

East Grand Rapids Schools Find Security and Economy With the TippingPoint X505 From 3Com | 2009-01-01 | 3Com |
| East Grand Rapids Public Schools is located in East Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA with 350 employees and 2,800 students. School is posed security risks to the suburban Grand Rapids school system. Administrators, in particular, feared that a virus, worm, or spyware could penetrate the district's network from the Internet and alter or access confidential school records. East Grand Rapids Public Schools began examining firewalls from Cisco, WatchGuard, and 3Com when administrators learned of the innovative, high-value TippingPoint X505 platform from TippingPoint, a division of 3Com.

Patterns for Application Firewalls | 2009-01-01 | Florida Atlantic University |
| Enterprise applications are typically implemented as web applications and may use web services. This provides a flexible architecture suitable for B2B communication but it may introduce new security threats. This paper discusses here an analysis pattern for an Application Firewall, intended to protect the applications from some of these threats. They also present a pattern for an XML Firewall, a specialization of the Application Firewall, and used to filter the contents of XML documents.

A Systematic Methodology for Firewall Penetration Testing | 2009-01-01 | SRI Consulting |
| Firewall testing is one of the most useful of a set of alternatives for evaluating the security effectiveness of a firewall. A major advantage of firewall testing is being able to empirically determine how secure a firewall is against attacks that are likely to be launched by network intruders. This paper advances the view that firewall testing should examine not only the ability of a firewall to resist attacks from external sources, but also the defenses of the entire network that the firewall protects against external threats. SRI Consulting's firewall testing procedures include penetration testing, a design review, and policy evaluation.
