whitepaper A Software Audit Framework for Spyware Risk Mitigation2006-02-24 Claremont Graduate University
The research described in this paper identifies a three part premise relating to the spyware paradigm. Firstly the data suggests spyware is proliferating at an exponential rate. Secondly ongoing research confirms that spyware produces many security risks - including that of privacy/confidentiality breaches via illicit data collection and reporting. Thirdly, anti-spyware controls are improving but are still considered problematic for several reasons. The research then concludes that control measures to counter this very significant challenge should merit compliance auditing - and this auditing may effectively target the vital message passing performed by all illicit data collection spyware.

whitepaper Spyware and Your Kids2006-06-09 01:00:26 Microsoft
If the computer starts to suddenly slow down or one begins to see pop-up windows, even when he or she not browsing the Internet, one may be the victim of spyware and other unwanted software. Spyware is software that is automatically downloaded to the computer without one's notice, and is often attached to another file one has chosen to download or install. Spyware can also be downloaded to the computer when one clicks on banner ads on Web sites. The types of unwanted software programs that kids accidentally download are usually annoying and may slow down the computer, but are typically not dangerous.
whitepaper How Windows Defender (Beta 2) Identifies Spyware2006-06-09 01:00:26 Microsoft
Identifying and analyzing spyware is a complex challenge. New forms of spyware are constantly under development, and the same technology that can make spyware malicious and unwanted also appears in software that users want to keep and use on their computers, such as antivirus software. It's not always possible for software to determine whether a program is something the customer wants to preserve or remove. Microsoft's strategy addresses this challenge in two ways: to work with other industry leaders to share best practices for how to identify and analyze spyware and to help ensure that Microsoft customers have the information and tools they need to decide which software they allow to download and install on their computers.
whitepaper Microsoft's Spyware Strategy2006-06-09 01:00:26 Microsoft
Spyware is one of the most vexing challenges to face computer users today. Industry analysts, partners, government leaders, and consumer advocacy groups all identify spyware as a serious problem that threatens to undermine public trust in computing. As Microsoft and its manufacturing and Internet Service Provider (ISP) partners receive ever more support calls related to spyware, Microsoft continually renews its commitment to deliver a powerful response to the threat. Microsoft is focused on helping to solve the problems caused by spyware and other unwanted software.
whitepaper Policy and Legal Implications of Spyware and Data Privacy2006-04-13 05:26:43
For years computer viruses have threatened productive use of personal computers, challenging users and support providers to Prevent and recover from viral attacks. Now another type of computer malady has began to enter popular consciousness: spyware. Typically, analyses of spyware focus on technical issues or provide pointers to resources for detecting and removing unwanted software. Equally important are the legal and policy issues colleges and universities need to consider in assessing institutional responses to spyware on campus. Institutional policies must address both computer usage and compliance with federal and state laws.
whitepaper Online Filing, Tax Software, and Keylogger Vulnerability2006-04-13 06:48:52 ParetoLogic
Tax software and Internet access have made the process of electronic filing a mainstay of tax systems around the world. Spyware - software that installs without the user's knowledge that may capture keystrokes, personal information, and marketing data and then report your information to a third party - is far more likely to intercept information that could steal your identity than viruses. While viruses and other malware caught by anti-virus software are usually intended to replicate and "take over" computers for use by the virus writer, spyware and keystroke loggers (typically called "keyloggers") operate silently in the background, reporting the information to a third party. Tax preparation software and electronic filings are high-profile targets for spyware and keylogger developers.
