Complete Security: The Case for Combined Behavioral and Signature-Based Protection | 2006-04-13 04:51:56
| The debate between behavioral and signature-based protection is a hot topic in IT security practices, especially in the area of system security. Given the speed at which viruses and worms hit the Internet, security that protects against the next new attack without an update is very attractive. This paper examines how a blend of signature-based and behavioral protection offers the best security against zero-day exploits, as well as high levels of productivity, patch mitigation, in-depth forensics, sustained manageability, and cost justification for the solution. | |||

Coddling Spies: Why the Law Doesn't Adequately Address Computer Spyware | 2006-04-13 05:27:47
| Consumers and businesses have attempted to use the common law of torts as well as federal statutes like the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, the Stored Wire and Electronic Communications and Transactional Records Act, and the Wiretap Act to address the expanding problem of spyware. Spyware, which consists of software applications inserted into another's computer to report a user's activity to an outsider, is as innocuous as tracking purchases or as sinister as stealing trade secrets or an individual's identity. | |||

FTC Cracks Down on Alleged Spyware Site | 2006-04-27 07:18:45 | Symantec |
| A U.S. District Court has ordered a Web business offering free music files, browser upgrades and ring-tones to halt downloads of alleged spyware and adware, at the request of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Instead of the free files or patches, users' computers were infected with spyware. The FTC's complaint alleges that the defendants' software code could track users' Internet use, change their home page settings, insert new toolbars into their browsers, insert a large frame displaying advertisements into browsers, and display pop-up ads. | |||

The Emerging Threat of Legal Liability for Failure to Prevent Spyware Attacks | 2006-04-13 04:10:20
| Threats that at one time seem remote may mutate rapidly into immediate, high-risk conditions that must be addressed if security incidents - and resulting litigation - are to be avoided. The latest such threat is the set of software-driven intrusions referred to generically as "spyware." Until quite recently, many dismissed spyware as an annoyance for consumers rather than a threat to business networks and the valuable information they contain. Today, spyware must be viewed as a priority threat that requires a state-of-the-art response. This paper focuses on two laws, and two sets of implementing regulations, that undoubtedly will be used to require businesses to implement anti-spyware measures: the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act ("GLBA"), and Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act. | |||

Protecting HTTP Traffic: Why Web Filtering Should Be Your First Line of Defense | 2006-04-13 03:57:16
| Unrestricted browsing opens doors that allow viruses, Trojans, spyware, and other malware into your network that will very likely if not certainly decrease productivity, cause network disruptions, or even steal vital proprietary information. Web filtering is concerned primarily with HTTP-based threats to the network. HTTP threats that need to be protected against include threats revolving around messaging, email, P2P fileshare, spyware, adware, hijackers, cookies, DRM, malware, phishing, spam, worms, and employee Web surfing. Protecting against all of these threats requires a multi-layered content security strategy. Web filtering is a critically important component of this strategy, since HTTP communications are one of the primary methods used to exploit people, applications and networks. |
