It truly depends on the way a person has the settings programmed and what type of anti-virus and/or anti-spyware person is running. Programs like Limewire will not be detected as spyware because even though they have malicious files attached to them they themselves are safe. This paper explains why some spyware software gives the false negatives on spyware detection.

Best of Breed vs. Suite Anti-Spyware: What's Best for You? | 2007-05-17 07:19:32 |
Webroot Software |
| |
This paper offers a compelling first-person account by noted security expert Ira Winkler of a penetration test he devised to demonstrate how hackers could theoretically compromise the highly sensitive Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems that secure nuclear reactors. Winkler, who is President of the Internet Security Advisors Group and has been called a "Modern Day James Bond" by the media, describes how his plan lured utility company employees to a Web site that downloaded spyware onto their systems—spyware that ultimately allowed Winkler's team to control the SCADA system and hence a nuclear reactor! Winker's paper points up the critical need for deploying anti-spyware software and builds a strong case for choosing a best of breed, or standalone, anti-spyware solution rather than a suite-based product.

LT International |

A despicable new thing out there on the net today is hijacking. It is a trend that is becoming all too common among Internet browsers. Hijackers are forcing web users to malicious sites and downloading software in their computers. This software can cause the users search pages and home page to be not of their choosing. There can also be Internet short cuts added to the favorites list. This allows the hijacker to be in control of what sites one will frequent. One would think it is just as easy as going into the browser settings and changing them back. The best action of defense is a good anti-virus program.
