whitepaper Addressing IT Risks of Software Applications: A Risk Management Strategy26/03/08 Symantec
As companies increasingly depend on software applications to enhance operations, the business impact of a broad range of IT risks concurrently rises. This whitepaper describes an IT risk management strategy for applications. Key aspects of this strategy include developing an awareness of various types of IT risks related to applications, quantifying the potential business impacts of application-related IT risks, and building an institutional capability to manage this IT risk. The paper then outlines how Symantec’s advisory consultants support organizations to address their IT risk management needs for applications.  sponsored by
whitepaper The Importance of Application Security26/03/08 Symantec
Application security has been a growing discipline in the IT world for about a decade. Not long ago, knowledge about securing applications came from a select few independent researchers, and resources for implementation were scarce. Through the years, more and more resources have become available as security expertise and toolsets have found their way to a wider population of technologists. Over the past five years, general knowledge of application security criteria has widened, making it rare that applications developers do not consider basic security aspects such as authentication and access control, among others.  sponsored by

whitepaper Systematic Structural Testing of Firewall Policies2008-07-29 North Carolina State University
Firewalls are the mainstay of enterprise security and the most widely adopted technology for protecting private networks. As the quality of protection provided by a firewall directly depends on the quality of its policy (i.e., configuration), ensuring the correctness of firewall policies is important and yet difficult. To help ensure the correctness of a firewall policy, this paper proposes a systematic structural testing approach for firewall policies. It defines structural coverage (based on coverage criteria of rules, predicates, and clauses) on the policy under test. To achieve high structural coverage effectively, three automated packet generation techniques are developed: the random packet generation, the one based on local constraint solving, and the most sophisticated one based on global constraint solving.

whitepaper Single Sign-On for SAP: Active Directory-based Authentication to SAP Applications2008-07-19 Quest Software
Do users in your organization have multiple user ids and passwords - one set for SAP, one for Active Directory and so on? Multiple identities create problems: spiraling help desk costs, decreased user productivity, and potential security breaches.

Single sign-on (SSO) is the answer. SSO controls the costs, reduces confusion and eliminates the security risks of single users with both an SAP and Active Directory sign-on and password. This new technical brief, "Single Sign-On for SAP," discusses how technology from Quest meets the challenge of multiple SAP and Active Directory system identities and passwords. whitepaper Guide to PCI Application Security Compliance for Merchants and Service Providers2008-07-10 Veracode
Triggered by a number of security breaches and concerns over the abuse and theft of credit card data, major credit card companies including American Express, Discover, JCB, Master Card and Visa formed the PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) in September 2006. The PCI Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) delineates requirements that vendors must meet in order to conduct business transactions using payment cards. New PCI requirements that specifically focus on application security become mandatory by June 2008. With their own brands at risk, merchants and service providers must secure their applications from potential vulnerabilities to comply with PCI standards.

whitepaper Security Strategies for the Midsize Business2008-07-09 Microsoft
Midsize businesses face many of the same security threats as their larger counterparts: viruses, worms, malware, unwanted and illegal software, and attacks from both insiders and outsiders. Likewise, they often have to comply with the same regulations that govern vertical industries ranging from health care to financial services.

The good news is that security doesn't necessarily have to be expensive. Organizations can maintain a sound security posture by developing--and following--a comprehensive set of security policies and using comprehensive and integrated security solutions when possible. Additionally, a variety of free or low-cost security tools are available to help with everything from risk assessment to routine updates.
