Keystroke Dynamics: Low Impact Biometric Verification | 2006-09-01 | Erudio Security |
| Biometrics has long been one of the solutions touted by security vendors to meet multifactor authentication objectives. However, user acceptance and cost issues often prevent organizations from adopting biometrics as a solution. This isn't to say that other multifactor solutions are any less cost prohibitive. The capital expenditure and on-going maintenance costs of token-based systems are often higher than those for biometrics. Solutions based on keystroke dynamics might help meet these business challenges. This paper looks at biometrics in general. This includes success factors for implementation and user acceptance. The paper also takes a look at how the effectiveness of biometric solutions is measured.

The Role of Data Quality in Biometric Systems | 2006-02-09 | Mitretek Systems |
| Data quality limits the accuracy of biometrics. Poor data quality is responsible for many or even most matching errors in biometric systems and may be the greatest weakness of some implementations. This paper uses an expansive view of data quality focused on its implications for operational databases and systems. The impact of poor data quality can be reduced in various ways, many of which depend on effective methods of automated data quality measurement. The paper analyzes the causes and implications of poor quality biometric data, methods of measurement, prevention, and potential remedies.

MacOSX.com Whitepaper: Biometrics | 0000-00-00 | DIGITALCROWD |
| Biometric identification refers to identifying an individual based on his/her distinguishing physiological and/or behavioural characteristics. As these characteristics are distinctive to each and every person, biometric identification is more reliable and capable than the traditional token based and knowledge based technologies differentiating between an authorized and a fraudulent person. This paper discusses the mainstream biometric technologies and the advantages and disadvantages of biometric technologies, their security issues and finally their applications in day today life.

Can Soft Biometric Traits Assist User Recognition? | 2004-10-21 | Michigan State University |
| Biometrics is rapidly gaining acceptance as the technology that can meet the ever increasing need for security in critical applications. Biometric systems automatically recognize individuals based on their physiological and behavioral characteristics. Hence, the fundamental requirement of any biometric recognition system is a human trait having several desirable properties like universality, distinctiveness, permanence, collectability, acceptability, and resistance to circumvention. However, a human characteristic that possesses all these properties has not yet been identified. This paper presents the motivation for utilizing soft biometric information and analyzes how the soft biometric traits can be automatically extracted and incorporated in the decision making process of the primary biometric system.

Hiding Fingerprint Minutiae in Images | 2002-02-01 | Michigan State University |
| This paper introduces an application of steganography and watermarking to enable secure biometric data (e.g., fingerprints) exchange. The fingerprint minutiae data had to be hidden in a host image, which can be a synthetic fingerprint image, a face image or an arbitrary image. It is this carrier image that is transferred to the receiving party in this exchange, instead of the actual minutiae data. The hidden biometric data are extracted accurately from the carrier image using a secret key.

Combining Face and Iris Biometrics for Identity Verification | 0000-00-00 | Michigan State University |
| Face and iris identification have been employed in various biometric applications. Besides improving verification performance, the fusion of these two biometrics has several other advantages. Two different strategies have been used for fusing iris and face classifiers. The first strategy is to compute either an unweighted or weighted sum and to compare the result to a threshold. The second strategy is to treat the matching distances of face and iris classifiers as a two-dimensional feature vector and to use a classifier such as Fisher's discriminant analysis and a neural network with radial basis function (RBFNN) to classify the vector as being genuine or an impostor. The results of the combined classifier are compared with the results of the individual face and iris classifiers in this paper.

Biometrics: A Grand Challenge | 2004-08-01 | Michigan State University |
| AFIS systems have been providing terrific value to the society by using a good integration of automatic and manual processes. The scope of this paper is intended to expand the frontiers of the state of the art biometric technology performance for their effective widespread deployment. This paper explores the fundamental roadblocks for widespread adoption of biometrics as a means of automatic person identification: effective and efficient pattern recognition; ensuring system integrity, system application integrity and return on investment.

HP ProtectTools Security Manager | 2004-11-01 | Hewlett-Packard (HP) |
| As computers are getting increasingly mobile and better connected, threats to data security are increasing in magnitude as well as complexity. Correspondingly business customers, for whom data security can have a direct impact on the health of their business, are becoming increasingly concerned about this problem. HP saw the need for a better security solution very early, and started devoting resources to solving this problem. Knowing that security needed to be addressed holistically, HP required the solution to bring many technology areas together in a way that helps ensure not only protection for client devices, but also helps ensure that client devices themselves do not become points of vulnerability that could be used to threaten the entire IT infrastructure.

Face Value: Examining the Factors That Influence Successful Facial Recognition Technology Implementations | 2004-06-11 | Imagis Technologies |
| The myriad claims and counter-claims about the efficacy of facial recognition (FR) systems bewilders many people, even perhaps those in the biometrics technology community. This paper attempts to bring clarity to the topic, reconciling the contradictions arising from a diversity of opinion on this relatively new and very promising technology.

Electronic Signatures & FDA: Electronic Signatures and FDA's 21 CFR Part 11 | 2002-03-22 | Communication Intelligence |
| Biometric signatures, is not only similar to a handwritten signature but is also less intrusive than most other biometric authentication techniques, such as retinal eye scan, or fingerprint. The biometrics of a handwritten signature is based not only on the shape of the signature but also the dynamics of the signature. The dynamics of the signature include the velocity and acceleration of the signing event, and stroke dynamics. Signatures have at least three attributes, form, movement, and variation, and since moving a pen on paper produces the signatures, movement perhaps is the most important part of a signature. CIC provides companies with a biometric handwritten electronic signature.
