Smart Enterprise Single Sign-on | 2009-09-01 | SECUDE |
| What is needed is an Enterprise Single Sign-On (E-SSO) solution that allows end-users to securely authenticate once and then access their desktop and their enterprise applications. And that is able to support all administrative and operational tasks required to efficiently use such a solution in an enterprise environment. This white paper describes how the requirements for a reliable and powerful enterprise single sign-on solution can be realized efficiently, conveniently, and at a low cost.

RAIL, Retail and Reality | 2009-04-13 | Fujitsu |
| The rail industry has seen a steep rise in demand and is gearing up to absorb further changes. As it morphs into a modern, mass-market consumer proposition and leaves behind an era of undifferentiated utility service, what can rail learn from the retail sector - a great success story in contemporary business change? Features of the white paper which bear on the retail dimension include simplifying fares, introducing smartcards in major cities and selling inter-city tickets via mobile phone.

Recommendation on the Credential Numbering Scheme for the FIPS 201 PIV Card Global Unique Identifier | 2009-03-01 | Smart Card Alliance |
| This paper presents a proposal by the Smart Card Alliance Physical Access Council (PAC) on the population of the GUID field found within the Cardholder Unique ID (CHUID) of a PIV card. Past industry submissions to the Physical Access Interagency Interoperability Working Group (PAIIWG), as early as April 2004, recommended that the GUID be in IPv6 address format. The intent was to have an industry-standard numbering schema that is not owned by the federal government, yet yields a number space large enough to avoid collisions within and between domains.

A Healthcare CFO's Guide to Smart Card Technology and Applications | 2009-02-01 | Smart Card Alliance |
| Healthcare is seeing a steady and increasing dependence on information technology that is rapidly transforming the practice of medicine and the delivery of care. Technology is an ever-changing and evolving aspect of modern business. For healthcare CFOs, the challenge is not only to secure the funding for new technology, but also to weigh the potential benefits of new and emerging technology against the costs. Serious consideration must be given to the consequences of technology adoption for legacy systems, lifecycle costs, and long-term technology evolution. This white paper outlines some of the major challenges faced by healthcare CFOs and discusses how smart card technology can provide innovative, practical and cost-effective solutions.

Making Privacy-Preserving Data Mining Practical With Smartcards | 2009-01-20 | Bar-Ilan University |
| Data mining provides large benefits to the commercial, government and homeland security sectors, but the aggregation and storage of huge amounts of data about citizens inevitably leads to an erosion of privacy. To achieve the benefits that data mining has to offer, while at the same time enhancing privacy, one needs technological solutions that simultaneously enable data mining while preserving privacy. This need has been recognized by the US government, as can be seen in the February 2008 report on data mining by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. This paper presents surprisingly simple and extraordinarily efficient protocols for a number of non-trivial tasks related to privacy-preserving data mining.

Identity Management Systems, Smart Cards and Privacy | 2009-01-01 | Smart Card Alliance |
| The requirement - how to identify people unequivocally while also protecting their privacy-shapes every discussion of how to design, build, or implement a new, secure, identity management system. Designing a new identity management system is complex, and the requirement to balance security and privacy affects everything about a system design, from the policies and processes formulated to support and maintain the system to the system's architecture and the particular technology chosen to authenticate individuals.

Unisys Takes Its Own Authentication Medicine | 2008-10-21 | Forrester Research |
| Unisys is a large and diversified systems integrator with operations worldwide. In recent years, the firm has seen its global workforce become increasingly mobile. At the same time, techniques to defeat passwords have become more sophisticated, eroding the security that passwords once provided. Moreover, as a security systems integrator, Unisys felt it was important not only to be secure itself, but to also demonstrate to clients that it believed in its own products and services. To address this challenge, the company embarked on a project to provide every employee with a smart card containing unified physical and logical access credentials.

Cryptanalysis on Improved Remote User Authentication Scheme Preserving User Anonymity | 2008-10-01 | Kyungil University |
| Remote user authentication using smartcards is the most widely used scheme for a valid user to login to a remote server and to access the services provided by the server over insecure channels. Due to the convenience, secure storage, and secure computation of smartcards, many smartcard-based remote authentication schemes have been proposed. Most of these schemes have the following good properties: the server has no password table; users can freely choose their own passwords; it demands only low communication and computation cost; mutual authentication is provided between a user and a server.

Integrated Solution Eases Path to Increased Security for Leading Italian Bank | 2008-08-22 | Microsoft |
| As the sixth-largest banking group in Italy, Banca Carige must maintain a constant focus on security. When the bank decided to implement strong, two-factor authentication based on smart cards, it needed a solution that would minimize the associated costs and complexity. Banca Carige met that need with Microsoft Identity Lifecycle Manager 2007, which the bank is using to deploy and manage the smart cards for its 6,600 employees. Banca Carige was able to easily begin realizing the security benefits provided by smart cards, including the ability to store and manage both internal and third-party digital certificates on a single card.
