Introduction to HiperDispatch Management Mode with z10 | 2008-04-27 | CPExpert |
| HiperDispatch was introduced with IBM's z10 server, and is available (via PTFs) on z/OS V1R7, z/OS V1R8, and z/OS V1R9. HiperDispatch was designed to (1) minimize the z10 hardware performance degradation caused by processor cache misses, and (2) maximize the amount of CPU processing power associated with any single logical processor. To achieve these design objectives, HiperDispatch implemented new designs within z/OS and PR/SM, and implemented a regular exchange of information between PR/SM and z/OS. By exchanging information, z/OS is aware of the topology between logical processors and physical processors and PR/SM is aware of an affinity between workload executing on logical processors and the physical processors providing the processor capacity.
This paper provides an overview of the z10 implications that require HiperDispatch, explains the algorithms that existed before HiperDispatch, presents an introduction to HiperDispatach concepts, and describes performance considerations when implementing HiperDispatch. Distributor Speeds Productivity and Reduces Costs With Centralized Infrastructure | 2008-04-01 | Microsoft |
| Mantrac Group sells and supports Caterpillar construction machines, power systems, and material-handling equipment. In 2007, its 2,600 employees relied on a virtual private network and wide area network to access applications. Mantrac wanted not only to simplify application access, but also to consolidate its infrastructure. In 2008, Mantrac deployed Windows Server 2008 to take advantage of new Terminal Services capabilities as well as features such as Hyper-V virtualization and Network Access Protection. As a result of the deployment, employees can access applications six to nine times faster, which has boosted productivity by more than 50 percent. Mantrac is also reducing costs and simplifying IT management.

Packaging Company Reduces Cost and Complexity by Switching From Novell | 2008-04-01 | Microsoft |
| As one of the leading manufacturers of innovative packaging for liquid food products, Elopak has operations all over the world. In the past, most of its locations managed their own networks with their own IT staffs. Most of its 40 offices ran file and print and directory services on Novell NetWare, and used Windows NT and Windows Server for applications. This decentralized infrastructure was very labor-intensive to manage and made it difficult for the company to deploy solutions globally across the enterprise. To address these challenges, Elopak decided to outsource its infrastructure hosting and management to Unisys and to migrate from Novell to Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008.

Solarflare Solarstorm 10 Gigabit Ethernet Controller | 2008-04-01 | Broadband-Testing |
| It's not long ago since one is asking - does one need Gigabit Ethernet. Now one is asking: does one need 10 Gigabit Ethernet? Well, there's a very obvious answer to that question. If one now has lots of gigabit connections to the desktops and laptops alike on the network, then simple arithmetic dictates that, in order to accommodate all of these gigabit connections, one needs something larger than a gigabit core backbone and server connections. Hence the 10 Gigabit arguments and the emergence of products such as Solarflare's Solarstorm 10 GbE controller that one is testing here.

AbeTech Tackles Fast Growth With Integrated Technology System | 2008-03-26 | Microsoft |
| As happens with many fast-growing firms, AbeTech expanded rapidly through a collection of disparate technology systems. AbeTech realized that with so many different repositories of data, the entire process of working with customers was not as efficient as it could be and decided a unified approach would benefit their business as well as their customers. Doing so would streamline the company's processes allowing for greater workflow and provide employees with tools to improve customer experience. AbeTech sought a way to integrate its data to provide the visibility, speed and accuracy it needed to compete as a fast-growing business. The company worked with Microsoft Gold Certified Partner Olsen Thielen Technologies (OTT) of Minneapolis/St. Paul to develop a customer relationship management strategy to achieve these goals.

Momentum Webcast: Virtualization Capabilities of Windows Server 2008 (Level 100) | 2008-03-19 | Microsoft Tips |
| Virtualization in an IT environment is essentially the isolation of one computing resource from others. By separating the different layers in the logic stack, greater flexibility and simplified change management is enabled - there is no need to configure each element for them to all work together. The attendee of this webcast will learn how virtualization can help to consolidate servers, maximize uptime, recover from disruptive events, and reduce the application-to-application conflicts that can cause compatibility problems in the IT environment.

A Taste of a Server Upgrade Helps a Wine Distributor Tighten Its Growing Operation | 2008-03-12 | Microsoft |
| Winebow wanted to maintain a consistent and security-enhanced infrastructure of desktop computers across multiple sites. Although it already used Microsoft Windows Server Update Services for patch management, Winebow wanted to add another layer of security to prevent its staff from facing potential computer compatibility issues, printer support needs, virus outbreaks, or other network problems. Winebow chose Windows Server 2008 to solve its business problem. The company decided to start by upgrading two of its servers running Windows Server 2003 R2 to Windows Server 2008. The upgrade takes advantage of Network Access Protection (NAP) in Windows Server 2008. | |||

Non-Profit Agency Consolidates Servers and Increases Performance by 300% | 2008-03-12 | Microsoft |
| The 138 employees of the social service agency Cincinnati Union Bethel provide support and education programs that assist urban women, children, families, and communities in Cincinnati, Ohio. The organization needed a solution that would allow them to use more of the inexpensive thin clients to access network applications from off-site locations, such as a remote office site or an employee's home. They also wanted to store data centrally and to improve disaster recovery. They deployed Windows Server 2008 for virtualization and Terminal Server. They selected Next Step Networking, a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner, to handle the migration. The initial solution involved one physical and one virtual server.
