whitepaper Sun's Solaris 10 for x86: A Platform for Enterprise Applications2005-11-03 01:00:03
Sun's Solaris 10 operating system is now available for both SPARC and x86 platforms. Its new features give software partners multiple reasons to update their current Solaris applications written for Solaris 8 and Solaris 9. This IDC white paper examines the Solaris 10 operating system, its new features - including DTrace and containers - and scenarios for deployment at customer sites. It discusses the new opportunities created by Solaris 10 for x86, as well as Sun's programs for independent software vendors (ISVs), and the challenges and opportunities this new product creates for Sun in the worldwide server market.
whitepaper Centralizing UNIX Authentication and User Provisioning With Oracle Internet Directory2006-03-09 01:17:43
Burlington Coat Factory (BCF) is a major garment retailer, based in the Northeast. BCF uses Linux workstations for conducting their core business with employees and customers. They use Star Office for their word processing needs and Oracle ERP and other applications also run on Linux and some Unix variants. There is a limited number of Windows PCs for conversion/integration purposes. As part of this standardization, their Unix/networking Administration group was also experimenting with ways to manage and maintain Linux workstations, especially user identities. The experiment gave rise to using LDAP v3 directory services, as implemented by Oracle Internet directory (OID). This paper describes the steps that were taken to realize this objective.
whitepaper Centralized Identity and Policy Management for Windows, Linux, Unix, Mac and Java with Active Directory and DirectControl2006-01-26 11:06:54
Centrify enables a secure, connected computing environment by seamlessly integrating your Unix, Linux, Mac, Java and web platforms with Microsoft Active Directory's identity, access, and policy management services. With its patent-pending Zone technology, Centrify delivers the only solution that does not require intrusive reconfiguration of existing systems and provides the granular administrative control needed to securely manage a diverse set of systems and applications. This white paper examines the compelling business and technical case for centralizing administration in Microsoft's Active Directory, describes how DirectControl enables you to integrate Active Directory with your non-Microsoft platforms, and describes DirectControl’s architecture and benefits.
whitepaper IBM eServer p5 590 and 595 Technical Overview and Introduction2005-12-01 01:00:02 IBM
This paper is a comprehensive guide covering the IBM eServer p5 590 and 595 AIX 5L and Linux operating system servers. Major hardware offerings are introduced and their prominent functions are discussed in this paper. The paper expands the current set of IBM eServer documentation by providing a desktop reference that offers a detailed technical description of the p5-590 and p5-595 servers.
whitepaper Server Management Best Practices With BMC Performance Manager2006-01-03 01:01:49
While every enterprise environment is unique, there are certain fundamental practices that can be followed to ensure overall server availability and performance. An enterprise typically consists of a variety of servers and operating systems, each hosting a different business-critical application or service. Each application or service performs differently depending on a variety of factors. These factors create unique challenges for the system administrator attempting to optimize these servers and the operations team attempting to monitor the environment. This white paper focuses on the basic components to manage in a typical server environment specific to the Windows, UNIX, and Linux operating systems.
whitepaper Samba on HP StorageWorks Enterprise File Services (EFS) Clustered File System Software2005-08-04 03:00:01
Samba is a suite of UNIX applications that speak the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol. Many operating systems, including Microsoft Windows and OS/2, use SMB to perform client-server networking. By supporting this protocol, Samba allows UNIX servers to communicate with the same networking protocol as Microsoft Windows products. This paper describes steps to install and run Samba on HP StorageWorks Enterprise File Services (EFS) Clustered File System incorporating Samba failover support.
whitepaper Best Practice for Using BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11.1 for UNIX With Sun StorEdge 6920 System2006-12-23 01:00:24 CA (Computer Associates)
This paper describes the concepts and requirements for protecting Oracle 9i Database Server on UNIX using snapshot scripts provided for BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11.1 for UNIX. The storage industry is constantly evolving with many technical innovations. Storage Area Networks (SAN) provide the ability to share storage devices. Network-attached storage devices such as disk arrays offload much of the workload involved in availability and data protection with services such as RAID, snapshot capability, failover, and so on from the host. Software enhancements allow the use of proven methodologies to access the advanced services provided by the disk arrays.
whitepaper Composable Memory Transactions2006-05-02 05:56:34
Writing concurrent programs is notoriously difficult, and is of increasing practical importance. A particular source of concern is that even correctly-implemented concurrency abstractions cannot be composed together to form larger abstractions. This paper presents a new concurrency model, based on transactional memory that offers far richer composition. All the usual benefits of transactional memory are present (e.g. freedom from deadlock), but in addition the paper describes new modular forms of blocking and choice that have been inaccessible in earlier work.
whitepaper Acceleration of UNIX Database Migration to Dell Servers With Sybase Replication Server2005-11-03 01:00:03
Sybase ASE 12.5.3 and Sybase Replication Server are enterprise class software products that are very effective in supporting a UNIX platform migration to Linux on the Dell PE2850. Sybase ASE 12.5.3 and Sybase Replication Server are very mature, stable products that can provide a significant advantage to the continual accessibility of your businesses data during a migration to a high performance platform, the Dell Linux PE2850. A team of Dell and Sybase engineers migrated a 100 GB Sybase ASE database from a Unix server from Sun Microsystems Inc. to a Dell PowerEdge 2850 with dual 3.4 GHz Xeon processors installed with the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 operating system. Details of the database migration are presented in this paper.
whitepaper An Overview of the HPC Software Development Environment2005-12-01 01:00:02
This paper addresses the characteristics and future directions of the Linux and UNIX High Performance Computing (HPC) Software Development Environment (SWDE). The HPC SWDE targets users who create technical software applications and need to exploit the performance features of a variety of HPC platforms and computing topologies. This paper presents a general overview of the HPC Software Development Environment and its development cycle. It gives details on the SWDE ecosystem and how its key parts are utilized to create optimally performing programs. Future trends in the HPC SWDE process and components are explored.
