whitepaper MIPS Management at Mainframe Organizations2007-08-01 CompuWare
In May/June 2007, Computerworld invited IT leaders involved in mainframe decisions to participate in a survey on MIPS usage and management. The survey was fielded via targeted broadcasts to Computerworld customers, as well as through an invitation on Computerworld.com. The goal of the survey was to better understand MIPS usage and management within mainframe organizations today. The survey was commissioned by Compuware, but data was gathered and tabulated independently by Computerworld Research. The following report represents top-line results of the survey and is meant to serve as a brief benchmarking tool for mainframe IT leaders seeking information about how their peers are addressing MIPS management within their IT organizations.
whitepaper IBM Virtualization Engine TS7700 Series Bulk Volume Information Retrieval Function User's Guide Version 1.32007-08-01 IBM
The IBM Virtualization Engine TS7700 Series is the latest in the line of tape virtualization products that has revolutionized the way mainframe customers utilize their tape resources. As the capability of tape virtualization has grown, so has the need to efficiently manage the large number of logical volumes the system supports. Internal to the TS7700 Virtualization Engine, a large amount of information is captured and maintained about the state and operational aspects of the resources within the TS7700 Virtualization Engine. This paper describes the use of a facility of the TS7700 Virtualization Engine through which a z/OS application can obtain that information.

whitepaper IBM Virtualization Engine TS7700 Series z/OS Host Command Line Request User's Guide Version 1.02007-08-01 IBM
The IBM Virtualization Engine TS7700 Series is the latest in the line of tape virtualization products that has revolutionized the way mainframe customers utilize their tape resources. Tape virtualization subsystems have become an essential part of most mainframe customer's operations. The IBM TS7700 Virtualization Engine, with its virtual tape drives, disk cache and integrated hierarchical storage management, is designed to perform its tasks will no customer involvement once it has been configured. This paper describes a facility of the TS7700 that supports a new z/OS Library Request host console command to allow an operator to request information pertaining to the current operational state of the TS7700, its logical and physical volumes and its physical resources.

whitepaper Virtualization Is More Than Virtual Machine Software2007-07-28 Kusnetzky Group
Decision-makers face the imperative to develop a clear understanding of the organization's needs as well as an understanding of all of the virtualization technology currently available in order to develop a sound architecture for adoption of this technology. Without these things, an organization is very likely to waste time and money on a patchwork quilt of incompatible point solutions. Organizations that deploy a single type of virtualization, such as virtual machine software, and use it to the exclusion of other forms of virtualization, it is likely to discover that their datacenter will be less efficient, less reliable and not perform up to their expectations.
whitepaper The First American Corporation: Advantage Through Virtualization and Collaboration2007-07-25 Cisco Systems
Cisco is working with companies like The First American Corporation to improve unified communications through virtualization and collaboration.
whitepaper Achieving Business Service Management Value Within Mainframe Environments2007-07-19 BMC Software
Mainframes continue to evolve to meet changing business needs. Today's mainframes host critical data, process critical transactions, and host many essential components of customer-facing, Web-based applications. Although no longer the single dominant platform, mainframes remain vital to one's business. The evolution of the mainframe from a single dominant platform to one that shares business-critical tasks with other distributed technologies drives the need for a unified enterprise management strategy. Managing the complex IT infrastructure using nonintegrated, component-specific tools presents numerous challenges for the IT staff. At the same time, as the IT staff faces today's technological challenges, business executives are required to reduce the cost of doing business and mitigate risk - all while increasing revenue.

whitepaper New Oil-Technology Becomes Real With Dell Cluster2007-07-18 Dell
The technology company EMGS has developed a new technology that has made it possible to search and locate oil in places were oil companies previously have concluded that there is no oil to be found. The new method is based on electromagnetic signals. To transform electromagnetic signals into valuable information, powerful calculations are needed. To be able to perform the powerful electromagnetic signal calculations, EMGS chose to buy a new supercomputer from Dell - The SBL High Performance Computing Cluster, containing 530 Blade-type servers, each with two Intel Xeon processors and a storage capacity of 12 terabytes.

whitepaper Encryption Facility R2 for z/OS Performance2007-07-05 IBM
IBM Encryption Facility for z/OS exploits the existing strengths of the mainframe and the IBM z/OS operating system. It is a host-based facility that leverages existing centralized key management in z/OS and the hardware encryption capabilities of IBM mainframes. Although the Encryption Facility for z/OS V1.1 implementation was based on a proprietary data format, the V1.2 release provides support for the OpenPGP Message Format standard as defined in RFC 2440. The OpenPGP standard was originally derived from PGP (Pretty Good Privacy). This support will meet the demand for standards-based solutions. This paper focuses on Encryption Facility for z/OS performance in the context of the two metrics: the use of the zAAP processor and the use of parallel processing.
