New Oil-Technology Becomes Real With Dell Cluster 2007-07-18 Dell

The technology company EMGS has developed a new technology that has made it possible to search and locate oil in places were oil companies previously have concluded that there is no oil to be found. The new method is based on electromagnetic signals. To transform electromagnetic signals into valuable information, powerful calculations are needed. To be able to perform the powerful electromagnetic signal calculations, EMGS chose to buy a new supercomputer from Dell - The SBL High Performance Computing Cluster, containing 530 Blade-type servers, each with two Intel Xeon processors and a storage capacity of 12 terabytes.

Encryption Facility R2 for z/OS Performance 2007-07-05 IBM

IBM Encryption Facility for z/OS exploits the existing strengths of the mainframe and the IBM z/OS operating system. It is a host-based facility that leverages existing centralized key management in z/OS and the hardware encryption capabilities of IBM mainframes. Although the Encryption Facility for z/OS V1.1 implementation was based on a proprietary data format, the V1.2 release provides support for the OpenPGP Message Format standard as defined in RFC 2440. The OpenPGP standard was originally derived from PGP (Pretty Good Privacy). This support will meet the demand for standards-based solutions. This paper focuses on Encryption Facility for z/OS performance in the context of the two metrics: the use of the zAAP processor and the use of parallel processing.

A language for semi-structured documents, XML is playing crucial roles in web services, messaging systems, databases, and document processing. However, the processing of XML documents has been regarded as the performance bottleneck in most systems and applications. On the other side, the multicore processor, emerged as a solution for the clock-speed limitation of the modern CPUs, has been growingly prevalent. Leveraging the parallelism provided by the multicore resource to speedup the software execution is be-coming the trend of the software development. This paper presents a parallel processing model for the XML document. The model is not designed just for a specific XML processing task, in-stead, it is a general model, by which one is able to explore various parallel XML document processing.

Maximizing Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS Throughput in a JES2 MAS Environment 2007-06-22 IBM

Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS (TWSz) is known for its job scheduling performance and the capability to exploit very large z/OS complexes. This paper is intended to help to exploit these TWSz strengths for submitting jobs and controlling joblogs. JES2 insures the integrity of the spool by use of a checkpoint data set, and in a Multi-Access Spool system (MAS) this is shared by every JES2 member. Contention for the checkpoint data set is managed by setting certain tuning parameters for each member. Two important tuning parameters are HOLD and DORMANCY.
