whitepaper The First American Corporation: Advantage Through Virtualization and Collaboration2007-07-25 Cisco Systems
Cisco is working with companies like The First American Corporation to improve unified communications through virtualization and collaboration.
whitepaper Achieving Business Service Management Value Within Mainframe Environments2007-07-19 BMC Software
Mainframes continue to evolve to meet changing business needs. Today's mainframes host critical data, process critical transactions, and host many essential components of customer-facing, Web-based applications. Although no longer the single dominant platform, mainframes remain vital to one's business. The evolution of the mainframe from a single dominant platform to one that shares business-critical tasks with other distributed technologies drives the need for a unified enterprise management strategy. Managing the complex IT infrastructure using nonintegrated, component-specific tools presents numerous challenges for the IT staff. At the same time, as the IT staff faces today's technological challenges, business executives are required to reduce the cost of doing business and mitigate risk - all while increasing revenue.

whitepaper New Oil-Technology Becomes Real With Dell Cluster2007-07-18 Dell
The technology company EMGS has developed a new technology that has made it possible to search and locate oil in places were oil companies previously have concluded that there is no oil to be found. The new method is based on electromagnetic signals. To transform electromagnetic signals into valuable information, powerful calculations are needed. To be able to perform the powerful electromagnetic signal calculations, EMGS chose to buy a new supercomputer from Dell - The SBL High Performance Computing Cluster, containing 530 Blade-type servers, each with two Intel Xeon processors and a storage capacity of 12 terabytes.

whitepaper Encryption Facility R2 for z/OS Performance2007-07-05 IBM
IBM Encryption Facility for z/OS exploits the existing strengths of the mainframe and the IBM z/OS operating system. It is a host-based facility that leverages existing centralized key management in z/OS and the hardware encryption capabilities of IBM mainframes. Although the Encryption Facility for z/OS V1.1 implementation was based on a proprietary data format, the V1.2 release provides support for the OpenPGP Message Format standard as defined in RFC 2440. The OpenPGP standard was originally derived from PGP (Pretty Good Privacy). This support will meet the demand for standards-based solutions. This paper focuses on Encryption Facility for z/OS performance in the context of the two metrics: the use of the zAAP processor and the use of parallel processing.

whitepaper Virtualization for Windows: A Technology Overview2007-07-01 Microsoft
Virtualization is unquestionably one of the hottest trends in information technology today. This is no accident. While a variety of technologies fall under the virtualization umbrella, all of them are changing the IT world in significant ways. This paper introduces Microsoft's virtualization technologies, focusing on three areas: hardware virtualization, presentation virtualization, and application virtualization. Since every technology, virtual or otherwise, must be effectively managed, this discussion also looks at Microsoft's management products for a virtual world. The goal is to make clear what these offerings do, describe a bit about how they do it, and show how they work together.
whitepaper Case Study: Nationwide Uses Linux and High-Power Virtualization for Web Presence2007-06-29 gartner
Nationwide Insurance significantly reduced expenditures by consolidating nonmainframe server workloads using Linux-only System z mainframes, while improving quality of service and providing for growth that has minimal impact on floor space, power and cooling. Its approach will interest any organization that houses a combination of Windows (where its applications have Linux equivalents), Linux, Unix and IBM mainframe operating environments and that is looking at new and innovative ways to consolidate its server environment.

whitepaper Parallel XML Processing by Work Stealing2007-06-26 Association for Computing Machinery
A language for semi-structured documents, XML is playing crucial roles in web services, messaging systems, databases, and document processing. However, the processing of XML documents has been regarded as the performance bottleneck in most systems and applications. On the other side, the multicore processor, emerged as a solution for the clock-speed limitation of the modern CPUs, has been growingly prevalent. Leveraging the parallelism provided by the multicore resource to speedup the software execution is be-coming the trend of the software development. This paper presents a parallel processing model for the XML document. The model is not designed just for a specific XML processing task, in-stead, it is a general model, by which one is able to explore various parallel XML document processing.
whitepaper Maximizing Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS Throughput in a JES2 MAS Environment2007-06-22 IBM
Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS (TWSz) is known for its job scheduling performance and the capability to exploit very large z/OS complexes. This paper is intended to help to exploit these TWSz strengths for submitting jobs and controlling joblogs. JES2 insures the integrity of the spool by use of a checkpoint data set, and in a Multi-Access Spool system (MAS) this is shared by every JES2 member. Contention for the checkpoint data set is managed by setting certain tuning parameters for each member. Two important tuning parameters are HOLD and DORMANCY.

whitepaper SuSE Linux on System z: Getting Started Tutorial2007-06-20 IBM
In this paper users can become better acquainted with using SuSE Linux on System z. Commands suggested in this paper should work on most SuSE Linux images running SLES8 or newer. In fact, the knowledge is generally valid across most distributions on Linux. Most steps of this paper assume the use of a shell session (ssh) and utilize putty, an open source product, which may be downloaded free off the Internet and run on MS Windows.

whitepaper Virtualization Technologies2007-06-09 Genesis Multimedia Solutions
The purpose of this whitepaper is to provide a general overview of virtualization technologies for someone who is new to virtualization, or for someone who is interested in the benefits and disadvantages of virtualization. Virtualization is the practice of creating an abstraction layer between a computing resource and another computing resource or user. An abstraction layer allows, for instance, a user to see multiple logical representations of a computing resource even though there is only a single physical resource. This paper concentrates on platform virtualization, where an entire physical machine is partitioned into multiple logical virtual machines.
